I was looking at ordering new tires and tubes and was going to move up the rear tire size to 120/90-18 and was wondering if I need to match the tube size to the tire or to the rim size? Anyone---

A tube will generally accomodate a range of tire sizes, but the wheel diameter must be a correct match.  For example, I use Metzler tubes - they are a bit heavier/thicker rubber, which has its pluses and minusess.
I use Metzler # ME E18 34G front tire tube and ME F18 34G rear tire tube, though when traveling/touring I just carry a front tire tube on the bike - it will easily expand to handle anything from a 3.25 to 4.00 inch or 90/90 or 100/90 - 120/90 18 tire with a bit more air.   But for a 'precise' fit, I generally run the slightly large rear tube when changing tires.

Many other tube mfgrs will have similar range of application.

The 120/90 looks pretty cool on the back of an R65 but can be a small challenge to fit without rubbing the swingarm. My '81 had a 120 Metzler out back that generated many new oaths whenever I had to pull/replace the rear wheel. I went back to the 110. Your mileage may vary.   Monte

You know I would stick with the 110 also but my son wanted me to change to 120. I think I will do the 110 thanks again for the wisdom.

Tires and tubes ordered (stock sizes) thanks to everyone for the help. I'm sure the new tires will make it ride even better. I've done the Steering head bearings clean & repack, front fork seals and rear shocks (Hagon). After this Ill start riding it to work give the Vstrom a vacation.

Most tires mfgrs, the 110/90 is the closest to the original 4.00" tire that came as original equipment - you'll be happy you went with them the first couple times you have the rear wheel off.
