Title: pic of my black R65
Post by: dav on July 08, 2009, 08:04:28 AM
g'day guys thought i'll show you my R65 which i "rebirthed" after letting it sit idle for way to many yrs. All it needed was a good hard clean (over 3 weekends worth). Still got a few things to fix up, new mirrors, repaint smaller bits etc....anyway hope you like :)

Lordy, that's a beautiful R65! I could scrub on my '81 for three months and it still would have that patina-of-age look.

Welcome to our asylum, Dav.

That's really nice looking. This is why I want one.

Question: What is the significance of the white stripe? The one I'm looking at doesn't have that.

All new black R65s came with a wider white pinstripe and a narrow red stripe on the tank and seat tail piece. Little ol' German ladies did the actual paint striping. It ain't no ghetto-style vinyl tape... No sir, this is the real deal.

My '81 still has its original paint and striping. As a badge of honor and mileage, some of the striping is softly worn away by the rider's knees. Probably when holding on for dear life as the old cow starts wallowing through the twistys.

<<What is the significance of the white stripe?>>

I guess the "white stripe" is an eye test. I don't see one, so I guess I fail. ;D  What I do see is the standard closely-spaced red & white pinstripes on tank and rear cowl. (Pixelation of digital photos plays tricks sometimes.)

What interests me, dav, is the decal(?) on the side of the rear fender. ("Mudguard" in your version of English? I like yours better, because it's more accurate as to functionality.)  If the decal concerns specifications and conformity with governmental regulations, we have something similar—but it's displayed on the top of the fender, hidden by the seat.

Gorgeous bike!! It's what mine might have been when it came out of the showroom.

Hmm. The '81 I looked at didn't have it. maybe someone took it off. It sure does look better to me with the stripe than without it.

The tank, and perhaps a few other bits, have likely had some paint work. Check the seat's metal tailpiece...pin stripes missing?

Ask the owner about his knowledge of the bike's history. Could have been born a different color or been down and repaired. I sense a price negotiation!   Monte
