Title: I´m still alive
Post by: ScottColumbus on March 11, 2009, 02:51:23 PM
Hello Friends,

a few days ago Justin asked me if I'm still alive. I am! Here is my proof.
In the winter months, I haven´t written here, but I looked in now and than.

In the meantime, a lot of things have happened. If you like, please view my pics.

I also found out why my old pics disappeared after 2 weeks. In the future this will not happen again.  :D

I didn´t like the colour of gray 75/6 because it was not an original colour.
Til last autumn my bike looked this way.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3462373232356431.jpg&hash=3a138db5ca97e6af009cd24f1278e3732ab98d29)

On ebay I got an old / 5-tank for little money. Inside it wasn´t so good. So I derusted it with a chemical fluid (phosphore-acid).

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3939666436326339.jpg&hash=9e50aaade9aa0d49e0c6371b542464e6b4cf12bb)

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3661366639356361.jpg+&hash=2ddbb216eff55b0392351d488ddf1025ab2ed669)

With the acid  I defatted and derusted the tank. The liquid had to be kept at 80 degrees Celsius for one hour.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3762356663363231.jpg&hash=6f0c0e8c72a894e207a5605407d47ca995da55ba)

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3930623139333130.jpg&hash=c3897c768109bf0e7eb053f9818a9b0b8b3a4879)

Then I gave a special colour into the tank.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3864306465666362.jpg+&hash=4a100e72156471105a89bd023ca7ca3ec0260114)

First I shook the tank to allow the paint to run into every corner. Then I blowed out the rest of the colour through the openings of the fuel taps.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F6438303062643931.jpg&hash=f9e454d01c419455198713a1fe659ee8b08c714b)

This is the result

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F6465363532356363.jpg+&hash=6c95cc3d82b63a362bac4a025358be1951c6b3e1)

All parts were painted in black.
Hand lines are very expensive. In addition, there are only a few painters who mastere this technique. That is why I bought white trim-lines (stickers) and fixed them.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3263393861623364.jpg&hash=6686e9d2395ed98d48fb1c01185c05478251ee7e)

My greasy fingerprints could be seen everywhere.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3861613966353734.jpg&hash=f0c94f90becc9ebb281d305b7fdc37fbd832354a)

But after the final coating everything was perfect.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3066353462313965.jpg&hash=ab7f58df48bfce4ed4bfb15984906d1e5b1830cc)

Sybille allowed me to finish my work in the living room

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3663646566343631.jpg+&hash=50126b06c93125b6d0b0821a2060ec3c8eb6b668)

In the meantime, my wife Sybille has worked on her R65, too. She changed the timing chain. She had to do that, because only her slim fingers were able to link the two ends of the chain. :'(

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3532333565356535.jpg&hash=84f4e76987b5ddd16b2661b5329274ddec821df5)

And this is the smile of the winner after the work.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F6134383433303965.jpg&hash=9fb299cb537b1fa21fb6924b3621e6f57b9ddae2)

An now my 75/6 is in that shape that I ever wanted.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F6665353862643935.jpg&hash=5c407bf206de8e41a1b98e1487adaa167f8df28e)

But that was not all.

After 235.000km my pistons began to rattle and the bike needed 1 liter of oil/1000km.

First I wanted to drill the cylinders and install oversize pistons. But this is very expensive.
For 67,-EUR I got two 800ccm nicasil cylinders and pistons with low milage.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F6336326366326466.jpg&hash=67bfd28f44f69b5aa7923f6b4fad572b11771dd0)

Part 3

Now the boxer runs smooth without disturbing noises and loss of oil.

Sybille and I am even rode in the winter.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3165383766373361.jpg&hash=cdac3e581e15bd4c7e8c11b882e5d3cfc50c72c5)

But that was not all.

Perhaps you remember  my Russian K-750.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F3731643537353464.jpg&hash=39a04a265a69c07bd9b8e4b4f647004471b8fc4f)

I always have been angry about the poor quality of Russian spare parts, but not anymore. Thanks to ebay. I have sold the Russian monster.

This is the last of the K-750, Sybille made this small movie.

 The Russian Monster  (http://www.redeker.net/r45/Das_Russenmonster.wmv)

I'm not sad that the K-750 is gone. Especially the wheels have always annoyed me. I never got then in a round shape.

But what do you do when you have money which you don´t would have rechoned with?

You go on the hunt! And buy a Beemer.

This time I found (bought) a  BMW R100 / 7 with RT fairing. For 1.200,-EUR, what is extremely cheap.

This is the biker, when I've picked up from the seller:

R80RT The sticker is incorrect. New stickers are already ordered.

On the RT I have renewed a lot of parts . But I´ll tell you later.

Fanstastic looking brace of bikes and the R100 ain't bad either.  Did you do your own painting of the R75?

Wow !

You and the family HAVE been busy !!   I am very impressed with the quality of your work, too.   Both you and your wife should be very proud of those lovely bikes - I am sure that they'll give you many years of happy road trips together!

Dirk, you HAVE been busy so I'll cut you some slack!  That new RT clone looks fantastic.  So, on your pin-stripes, you applied striping tape and then sprayed clear over them?  I have thought about trying that...

Unfortunately I'm having trouble downloading all the piccies... >:(

But what I can see of the /6 - you are to be congratulated. It is indeed a work of art.

Thank you, guys!  :)

@Justin and Bengt_Phorqs
I brought the fuel tank and the other parts to the painter and got them "back in black" with a first clear layer. Than I applied the striping tape and brought the parts to the painter, who finished the clear.

Welcome back, Dirk, it's about time you got on here and started posting some of your great pics again  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
i don't think I ever realized that the gray on your /6 wasn't a stock color for that model and year: sure looked good, although even better now with the fresh black and pinstripes!

Please keep the pics flowing this Spring & Summer as often as possible...

Yeah, dirk, we really missed ya!  Good to have you back around here once again!

You really have that "magic touch" with bikes!  And your wife being able to wrench her own bike!!!   Double wow!!!   :o   She's definitely a keeper!!

Please don't wait so long to post more photos, OK?

Beautiful work! I have had Japanese bikes that used the clear coat over tape pin striping, an economical method that gives a good result. I always get a kick out of bikes in the house for repairs. My wife not so much! >:(

The bikes are nice but I really have library envy.  All I got was the smallest bedroom in the 3 bedroom house for mine.  I used to think that was plenty but now I know better.

It's good you upgraded your bikes so you could keep up with your wife's R65!   :D

Nice!  Someday I will have to give my r65 the same treatment.  Are those aftermarket alloy rims or stock BMW?  I much prefer laced up wheels to my "Snowflakes".   :)

The pin stripes are made by trim-line[url].
A few years ago I  fixed the same stripes on the fuel tank of our R65, even without a clear coat. They still stick there.

I am so impressed with you two. The bikes are tremendous. I too am  very impressed with your library...size and neatness. Don't you ever get large books that just don't fit on the shelf and have to go sideways?? And many of your books look to be part of a volume set for the most part.

Scott, would you ask Sybille if she has some favourite motorcycle pants that look neat and not all baggy on her. She looks to be about the same stature as me. I like to wear the pant leg inside my boots if they are narrow enough. Some zippered venting would be ideal too. I'm 5'/4.5" and 125.

Dirk,
Welcome back!  Beautiful bikes there.  I really like how that striping turned out.  If I ever paint my tank, I'll have to remember how well that turned out.

It's nice to see that Sybille works on the bike too.  SCJohn, don't be so surprised.  Us women can work on bikes too!   And we can multitask!   8-)

The bikes look so nice sitting together.  And I'll bet even nicer when ridden together.  What fun!

Dirk, very nice job on the upgrades.  I'm always amazed how nice a bike can look with a little talent and ambition.  I really like the "Classic" black look of your bikes.

Tell Sybille she's a one-in-a-million, to help with the maintenance like that.

Sicher fahren/reiten.

No matter how many things I'm working on at the same time, they all get done properly.   ;)  Unfortunately there isn't enough time to do just one job at a time. :(

Okay, Semper Gumby.  I'll play nicely too.   ;D  I should have known I'd get joked with about that remark.   ::)  I just hope they can take a teasing back.

Sue, I asked my wife what trousers she wears. It´s this one (http://www.louis.de/_40b9b65557ae346968e5e9b6d5930b7b0e/index.php?topic=artnr_gr&article_context=detail&artnr_gr=208718&anzeige=0).

My wife laughed about Ed Miller´s remark, that after the upgrade of my 80/6  ;D I can keep up with Sybille´s R65.
Normally she rides so slowly, that she duells herself with wheelchair-riders on the road.  ::)

I´ve continued my works on the R100. I found out that the compression on the left cylinder was about 11 bar and on the right only 2 bar. Vesterday I removed the Cylinderhead and found this totally burned out ventile.

Hmmm!
I think it just  will take just some more time until the R100 will be back on the road again.

Dirk, that's one of the nastiest looking valves I've ever seen!  :o I'm surprised it hadn't let go and caused you untold grief...  :P

Ditto to what Justin said !  I am AMAZED that valve head didn't drop onto the top of the piston already - you are very fortunate !!!

[smiley=3stooges.gif] Here, Melena, I'll help!! [smiley=chairshot.gif]All in fun, of course!  I wonder if they'd believe that I let an old R25/3 stay in my spare bedroom while it was being restored - better than outside with no cover.  And my hubby asks for my nice small hands all the time.

Dirk, so glad to see your beautiful pictures again.  Very interesting work you've done there.  I agree about that valve!! WOW!  [smiley=shocked.gif]

I gotta say, Dirk, that looking at these pics you have taken of your bike's "insides" is a lot like doing surgery, something I could never do on Britta!  I'd have to turn her over to the "experts", while I wait outside in the lounge and pace back and forth nervously until the "operation" is over with!

GREAT pictures, though!  Keep 'em coming!!!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

;D  Thanks Aïda!  I just liked seeing his eyes go around in circles when I thwapped him "upside his pointy head".  But those other 2 work also.  Hee hee!    Oh, my!  I do think winter is getting to me.  It's time to be getting outside more.

Dirk,  I sure hope I never find a valve like that in my bike.  Yikes!   :o  Those pictures are great.  I know we will all love seeing the magic you work on this bike.  Thank goodness you have a good place to work on it.

Holy Moly!  That valve looks like Civil War era.  I bet the valve seat is also "toast".  But no valve "recession".  I guess R100 valves are made of sterner stuff than the R65 valves.  So what brought this on?  Too lean?   :P

Very beautiful bikes, indeed. I wonder how you get the aluminium so clean?

On the subject of pinstriping:

Quote
Beautiful work! I have had Japanese bikes that used the clear coat over tape pin striping, an economical method that gives a good result. I always get a kick out of bikes in the house for repairs. My wife not so much! >:(
rich

I have had all the parts of my wh8la2 painted black with a white pinstripe. The pinstripe was done by painting the background white, then a tape pin stripe was applied and the whole was painted black. When the paint had dried the tape was removed and a clear coat applied. The result is a slightly recessed pinstripe which is quite satisfactory as you can see.

Thank you - it is nice when people appreciate one's work. My best friend, and we've been best friends for 45 years, do not believe in my ability to put the bike together again, but then he is a boat builder and looks upon me as a hopeless theorist.

Recently I suggested that we restore a '69 Citroén DS 23 injection when we are pensioned off - that would be the ultimate test.

That is beautiful work.  You've done a great job on her.  Transforms the wh8la2 completely.  But now how are you going to call her that when she's not white anymore?  Or will she always be the wh8la2 to you no matter what?   ;)

Good job Trolle!

Now that I would like to see - I do love the lights and the hydraulics. There's a real estate salesman up around here that has one - it looks like a sweet ride. Would you get the hardtop or convertable?

Having said that there is 2CV that a lady drives around here as well - black and yellow (ummmm  ::)). The colour I'd give a miss, but it's a very cool car.

Anyways, back to the valve.  What mileage is on the R100?
Title: Re: I´m still alive

@trolle: Very nice bike! You are a lucky guy because you have a warm and clean workshop!
I envy about you.

@Steve Hawkins: I don´t know what milage is on the R100. But what I know is that nobody loved the  bike before.

There was no clearance between the exhaust valve and the rocker of the of the right cylinder. So the ventile never closed correctly. The second point is the condition of the carbs. I don´t believe that they worked as they should.

Boy I haven't tuned in for awhile and I gotta say my mouth is hanging open here, catchin' flies!!! Those valves and carb pics from Dirk. Holy Moly!  I thought I had a disagreeable valve! :o

And to see Trolle's bike looking just so stunning! Well, I am in some pretty heady company here to say the least. I will never worry about a specific job again on the bike...the expertise here is fantastic.

So...is it muriatic acid Dirk???? I think a Simple Green soak for 20 years wouldn't get things that clean.  Enquiring minds NEED to know.

Which is about the only thing I haven't tried yet. Nevertheless I found a very good remedy called "Rust and Calcium Remover" and it removes almost everything but the small black flecks on the cooling fins. It is great for cleaning rust and dirt off bolts and nuts and it removes the vax residue on the carbs and gasoline cock very nicely. I do not know what it contains, but muriatic acid is probably one of the ingredients.

Hi

Was the legend on the right side of the tail gate golden? It is hard to see on the photo, but if so and the car is mechanically sound I would make an offer between US$ 3,500-5,500.

I take it, that you will pay the transportation costs  ;)

Yes - definately golden... ::)...I know where they were taking it so I might just nip in tonight and liberate it and possibly paint the legend.... (sorry about the quality of the photo - it was on a camera phone and people behind were a honkin' their horns..like I could go faster - there was a bloody great truck in front of me!!)

Now I figure that if a new car tax is 180%, the second hand tax must be in the vicinity of 90%.....and this will then cover the cost of transportation ;D

Cheers
Tim

OK ;)

I can buy it here in Denmark but the risk of getting a car eaten by salt corrosion is very great, which is why many veteran car buyers get their cars from California where it is possible to find a 35 year old car without any rust.

Not that I think that buying a car in Australia and transport it to Denmark will be a economical sound thing to do, so I will look for one in Italy or the southern part of France when that time comes.

I still think that it is one of the finest cars ever made.
