.. Or is it addicted? The wife and I decided that we want a bike with sidecar and take it to the south of Italy next year (she's half italian). So I put my R65 up for sale with the idea to buy a R80 or R100 with sidecar. And started to wait.
After some time someone mailed to see if I was interested in his XT600. Still want an offroad bike, but it made me think. Hanging out in the garage, looking at the R which has been with me for a short time, but went on some nice trips with me and my wife (including a few days away after our marriage in july) I decided I will keep it. I enjoy riding this simpel, small and outdated machine and I realized I got attached to it. Usually takes longer.
Maybe it's because the R65 is the 'underdog' of the airhead family :).

I agree! Lots of Beemers have come and gone through my garage in past years. Four of them taking up space there now :) . R65 is one of my more recent aquisitions, and already one of my all-time favorites. Small, light, simple and classic style. Not encumbered with side or top cases, not even a luggage rack. Fast enough for my town riding and even short country day trips.
I'm even thinking of some longer R65 rides (but then would either have to limit myself to carrying only what could be carried in a medium sized tank bag or bungeed on the back, or add the bags I'm now glad I don't have to fool with.)
Too many roads and destinations, not enough bikes or time!

Still keep working on that rig, though! They are a blast! A totally different vehicle all it's own.

Ya know it's not just the bike. I'm always glad to run across another air cooled boxer on the road but when I come across someone on an R65, well, they just seem to be the best of the bunch.

Great to see that I'm not a sentimental wimp. Or at least nog the only wone ;D ;D
Still, the 3th wheel will come. A saw one with a classic frame (not unlike the R69) with a R90/6 engine. I would like something like that :)

That is called a "conversion". Very practical, esp. if you can find a /2 (Earles) with a blown engine, so you don't have to sacrifice a perfectly good /2 for the project.
You get the best frame for the job, and with your new engine (take you pick: 1970-93, 600-1000cc) will provide you with all of the power and modern electrics you need.
And the kids would love it!

Nathan at Boxerworks was rather astounded that I didn't buy the late model R100 mono that had a lot of the equipment that I had on my R65. For some crazy reason, I'd rather just keep what I have. It is "good enough" and keeps me out of trouble (by not going so fast as the R100 mono Starship.)
Happily attached since 09/01/1993.

Actually the R65 makes a good sidecar hack...if ya don’t mind cruising at 60. I do enjoy mine! I did have to beef up the frame........can point you to the guy who sells kits to turn a R65 into a excellent sidecar hack.... includes a heavy duty triple tree.... frame braces. I also had to beef up the electrical system....but was well worth it all. I have a cool rig.....a head turner that makes the grand kids squeal when I turn in the drive. I have had mine 3 years now with no problems.....Well....I did have some stress cracks in the sidecar that had to be fixed.....but no problems at all with the cycle.
