Title: Hi From a New Member
Post by: submariner on October 29, 2008, 02:56:59 PM
Hello to everyone! I've always wanted a Beemer and, after some 20 years as a forced car driver :'(, my recent divorce allowed me to spend a little of my meagre money on an R65 ;D.
WONDERFUL!!

C'mon in Sub and pull up a stool. You'll find this group welcoming, informative, even taking time for some consolation on life's trials and at times we'll even disagree. I see you're in Salisbury. Isn't that where the Henge is? We'll be wanting the obligatory tourist shot of the bike and...well you know.

Hey Sub.  I live in Swindon, just up the road.

If you want to get together for a ride out when the weather improves, just ping us.

I used to work at Boscombe Down whilst in the RAF, but been out for a while now.  Know the roads between Boscombe and Swindon like the back of my hand - you especially want to try the Amesbury to Marlborough road via Netherhaven, Upavon and Pewsey.  Cracking road when quiet.  But watch out for slow moving Army Convoys!

What ho!

Welcome Sub - any idea where the Dom is?

Seriously though - these are a great bunch of people willing to share anything with you (well ALMOST anything)

Cheers

Welcome!

I'd like to try some of those roads in "Old Blighty" that Hawkins wrote about.  Would be great if I could get my Chica-tita over the pond to ride them on!

In the meantime, the mountains and deserts of Utah will have to do. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Oh....wow.

That Sub, is an absolutely beautiful bike.

Are the rims anodized or painted?

Oh boy, oh boy - I want, I want. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Hey Sub,

You have a kindred spirit an hour away....

I have RAASKs and a single seat.  Time to swap notes

Well Steve - you got your punchline correct - 'Where's me hacksaw'...

What wheels/rims are you running?
Title: Re: Hi From a New Member
Post by: steve hawkins on November 03, 2008, 05:35:59 AM
The wheels are from an R80 ST.

The front wheel is a 19 inch instead of an 18 inch, which is why the fork stantions have been raised by half an inch.

Actually these wheels are pretty much worn out.  I have a spare rear hub to replace the one shown as there is no brake lining left.....They are getting difficult to source - especially with some life left in them.

Sub

I think you should seriously take a page from Steve's book - 'lighter - faster'.

Get rid of those battery covers.

Oh - and if you do - give us a hoi - I'll take 'em off your hands.... ;D

Cheers

I have still got my pair.....and numerous other bits.

Sub - sounds reasonable.  Book a sunny day and I'll be there!

Watch out though, I might bring me spanners and have yer heads off!  But you would probably notice!

Cheers

Hi Submariner. Very, very, nice looking R65. Welcome.
It's the first time I've seen pics of your R65, too, Steve.
Would be better in the 'flesh' though. maybe it's time to plan a UK R65 meet up.

My wife and I traveled to the UK this summer and the whole time I kept thinking how wonderful it would be to be to have my R65 to just roam the country roads.  Everything is so close together.  You travel 50 mles and you are in a completely different region.  The landscape is different, the food is different the accents are different.  And the pubs!   Here in Virginia we do have our share of great countryside and roads to ride, but nothing like the little local pubs that are, well, everywhere in the UK.  Nothing beats a fresh traditional ale.  Can you feel the jealousy start to show here?  Gotta keep telling myself - the weather's not that great - what else? - oh yeah, $10 gas, $10 gas.

I'd love to hop  the pond and attend a r65 rally on the Isle, although I'd probably have to borrow my Somerset buddy's Honda to get there. Looking forward to those Henge pics!

I think you will be happier with the Beemer!
because:
•      BMW’s only need their fluids changed every 2000 miles.
•      BMW’s' curves never sag.
•      BMW’s last longer.
•      BMW’s don't get pregnant.
•      You can ride a BMW any time of the month.
•      BMW’s don't have parents.
•      BMW’s don't whine unless something is really wrong.
•      You can kick your BMW to wake it up.
•      You can share your BMW with your friends.
•      If your BMW makes too much noise, you can buy a muffler.
•      If your BMW smokes, you can do something about it.
•      BMW’s don't care about how many other BMW’s you have ridden.
•      When riding, you and your BMW both arrive at the same time.
•      BMW’s don't care about how many other BMW’s you have.
•      BMW’s don't mind if you look at other BMW’s, or if you buy BMW magazines.
•      New BMW’s must be asked for, and if you don't want to pay for them, you don't get them.
•      If your BMW goes flat, you can fix it.
•      If your BMW is too loose, you can tighten it.
•      If your BMW is too soft, you can get different shocks.
•      If your BMW is misaligned, you don't have to discuss politics to correct it.
•      You can have a beer while riding your BMW.
•      You don't have to be jealous of the guy that works on your BMW.
•      You don't have to deal with priests or blood-tests to register your BMW.
•      You don't have to convince your BMW that you're a motorcyclist and that you think that BMW’s are equals.
•      If you say bad things to your BMW’s, you don't have to apologize before you can ride it again.
•      You can ride a BMW as long as you want and it won't get sore.
•      Your parents don't remain in touch with your old BMW after you dump it.
•      BMW’s always feel like going for a ride.
•      BMW’s don't insult you if you are a bad rider.
•      Your BMW never wants a night out alone with the other BMW’s.
•      BMW’s don't care if you are late.
•      You don't have to take a shower before riding your BMW.
•      It's always ok to use tie downs on your BMW.
•      If your BMW doesn't look good, you can paint it or get better parts.
•      You can't get diseases from a BMW you don't know very well.

Sub,

Grubby weekend, this weekend.  I capsized my sailing dinghy on Saturday and then chickened out with the sailing on Sunday.  Foul weather - not for riding for fun.

I am progressing with the rebuild of my R100.  Took the swing arm off and discovered the swing-arm bearing are toast - ordered some spares.  They were a bit of a struggle to get out though - had to resort to the dremel.  Extra cost to the rebuild.  Already had to ditch the option of the full Kiehan system - too expensive.

Hey ho, still waiting for the 'friend of a friend' to do the welding.  Cannot start to rebuild the bike till that is done and dusted.  Have to console myself with a bit of rubbing down and repainting - still plenty to do from the orginal list....stiff throttle - best look into that as well!

Steve H
