I just finished a Smoke Red job for an R100S this morning and decided that if the "Junkyard LS" survives it will be painted in that scheme...

I like that effect. Whilst waiting for coats to flash I was playing with my gun and got it to spray that fog look, though I'm not sure how you actually do it on the tank. Do you mask and paint most of the main coat, then fog one or two passes over onto the sides after removing the masking?
I'm wearing the paint off my R65's tank, but I'll probably just paint it black again.
Did you see that fancy tank holder that Eastwood is selling? It sure would make the job easier, but it's a lot of money for such a specific job. And the tool would take up a bunch of space when you weren't using it. It mostly got my eye because one of the pictures shows a '70 Bonneville tank.

First coat is gold, apply striping tape, then shade in everything that's black, then three coats of Candy Red over the whole thing finished off with a couple heavy coats of clear...
To get the shading effect (with the black) just crank the fluid flow back (keep air the same) so only a little paint comes out and use that to "shade" the edges... The original BMW Smoke Red is over a very dark blueish purple, and looks nice, but I prefer the black...

I'm thinking that is pretty much the same look I'd like for Tillie, when I save up enough dimes to get all her parts painted.

It's one of my favorite paint schemes. I did a Blue Smoke on my '78 /7 years ago and I liked that quite a bit. BMW never did a Blue Smoke, but I think they should have... I have some Candy Grey dye and am thinking about re-doing the black bike in it. Some day when my money tree matures...
