Title: What's in YOUR toolkit?
Post by: montmil on July 16, 2008, 07:40:02 AM
Now that I have satisfied the BMW gods by sacrificing enough shekels to get the R65 reliably roadworthy, what recommendations are there for a carry-along tool roll? I'd rather not tow my rollaway cabinet or have to add saddlebags  ;) Whatcha think?

The stock tool roll that came with my R65 has yet to let me down. The only things I've added have been a roll of electical tape and a handfull of zip ties.

Now all I need to do is look up the stock tool roll inventory. Cool!

I think it has been asked and answered here, before.

May have but using the search feature revealed nada. Got answers from Google. Anyway, here's the full scoop from Duane Ausherman's site. He's got it all together.

Chiming in late here,
Monte you strike me as someone who owns a lot of tools like myself. I ordered up a tool roll from Bob's and began by stuffing it with things listed on Dwayne's site. Then I began to do my routine maintance with items just from the roll. With that experience I began to add and change what I carry. Some things I have that were not in the Kit are a cheap VOM, cable tys and yes, bailing wire, just in case!

A mobile phone is always handy just in case the tool you need isn't in there!

Rich,  I like your "start with an empty tool roll" plan. Just last saturday I was casually shopping for a BMW-sized roll up. As you, I enjoy tools and the opportunities they provide. I am preparing my own list for the R65 and plan not to "rob" my existing tool chests.

As an addendum to the thread's title, how about "What's in your pocket?" Cellphone, CHECK; a little cash, CHECK; credit card, CHECK; I'm good to go!

Ummmmm, yeah.  This one sure helped me out last year.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

When you get the tool roll, make sure what size you want.  I got one for Christmas one year and it was too big to fit in the tool box under the seat.   :(

Yeah, years ago I bought the Sport Tool Roll (Kathy's) with the "bigger is better" mentality.
It has never made it on the bike.  Much too big.  Anybody want to buy it?

A Pozidrive No2 screwdriver is very valuable if you need to remove a carb top. The cross head driver in the BM toolkit is not the correct fit for these carb screws which can be VERY resistant to removal. Wrecking the screwheads could make a minor problem into that interesting challenge of drilling out steel screws from an alloy casting. Tricky when you're in the field. Oh what fun  ;D
I once had a diaphram tear during a European tour, although it was a big boxer not R65. Once the carb top was off the diaphragm was fixed with SuperGlue. Just goes to show.
So don't forget to add a tube of SuperGlue to the toolkit tas well.

I like the "shorty" wrenches. That's what's going into my roll. Where do you stow the extra foot and sandal?  ;D   Can you direct me to the "Kathy's" tool roll vendor? Thanks.

BTW... with a tool stash like that, you could easily become a touring Gypsy BMW mechanic.

Monte,
Extra foot & sandal? Yer always the comedian! ;D I got Kathy's standard tool roll from Bob's BMW and tho a bit high priced it is very good quality. You can find it here towards the bottom of the page: http://store.bobsbmw.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=952
Currently I'm waiting on my luggage keys from Bob's along with some new handlebar grips. James the parts guy at Bob's is good to deal with on the phone and is a bit of a comic too.
I'll do a little show & tell on installing grips when they get here and a shot of my meager tool kit.

I also bought the small tool kit from Bob's & like it.

One additional item that I consider very important is the little brass right-angle valve stem adapter that Bob's sells.  I have yet to find an inflater head that will fit easily inside the opening of my Snowflake wheels. The adapter fits nicely inside the sparkplug socket, so it takes up virtually no extra space in the tool roll.
