Bought my R65 in Austin, Texas on April 5th. Rode it a bit in Capitol City then parked in my son's garage for a week.
Brought it home the next week and putted about for a few times. Spent lots of time with the engine running setting the carbs and just listening to the mellow sounds. Rode it to get a haircut, Cruised by the home of another BMW owner. Just airing it out.
This afternoon, after getting the electrical gremlins exorcised, I went for a ride through the neighborhood and was enjoying the dropping temps when... the engine up and quit on me.
My first though was that I had, while tracing all sorts of wires and circuits, done something evil to a wire that kept the motor, well, motoring. Oh, jeez.
April 5th to June 16th... I had no idea how much fuel was in the tank when I bought the bike. I did recognize the fact that the tank was fairly hefty as I frequently removed and replaced it. Must be all that gas. I could hear it sloshing. That's good, right?
So I up and run outta gas a block from home! I'll have to check the tank capacity but I did invest in three gallons of the liquid gold. Got home by doing the R65 single petcock bike boogie dance.
Lame. I know. No excuse.

So you were able to slosh enough from the other side over to the petcock side to power your way back home ?

Did you know there is a reserve on the petcock?
You don't ride with it in the reserve (up) position all the time, do you?
A little over 5 U.S. gallons, if it is a twin-shock model.

Yep. Leaned the bike over and gave it a wiggle.
The reserve position - up handle - got a test. The in-line filter got some junk. Did a quickie clean out of the fuel tank before adding fresh fuel. Will need to do a more thorough flush of the tank soon. Pulled the float bowls to check for crud but they were "Mr Clean" inside.
