Title: My first "clean", but short, ride
Post by: montmil on June 10, 2008, 10:57:35 AM
Worked hard on the R65 last Saturday and Sunday morning... getting it done before my 5-year old grandson and 7-month old granddaughter arrived from Austin. My wife has been in Arkansas holding her mom's hand as my mother-in-law prepared for some mid-serious surgery.

Just ol' Grandpa and two kids. What could possibly go wrong? Here's where I reference the Michael Keaton movie, Mister Mom. You fed that baby chili? I do have an old photo I emailed to my daughter-in-law while my grandson, aged two at the time, was spending a week with us... posed him in front of the TV watching NASCAR... beer in hand, a beef jerky stick in his mouth and a cigar beside him. Guess what? I gotta phone call!

Wife showed up Monday evening and the first question she asked was, "Anybody hurt in the explosion?" OSHA would probably declare our house uninhabitable after me and the kids crashed.

Anyway... this is supposed to be an R65 story.

I need a haircut to trim away the gray - which would leave me nearly bald! - so Tuesday morning I cranked up the bike and it was idling too fast. Never did that before. All my tweaking had evidently altered the cable situation - I did have the throttle chain/gearbox off - so re-set the cables per spec and motored away.

It was a short ride, but very satisfying as the bike behaved entirely differently from my pre-buy ride in Austin. Ignition is spot on, the rear wheel bearings vastly improved the handling, my wire-reduction program is functional, blah blah blah. It's all good.

Now to get a current license plate tag and inspection sticker plus the Texas "M" endorsement on my driver's license and I'll be good to go. And I live next door to a cop! Keep the mufflers...

Though I gotta find a new barber... There's still too much gray on my head.

Congradulations on getting the bike going again.

I am planning to re-assemble my R65 this upcoming weekend (camshaft replacement) - hopefully everything goes well.........haven't done this before on a Beemer.

My biggest concern is the ignition / timing - ( haven't got a stoboscope, and not sure how to do static timing on the R65)

Regards

Danie

Good to hear that you're making 'positive' progress  with getting the bike back out on the road.

I would suggest a few local rides before venturing out too far, after working on my '81 for about a year, on my first ride a few month's ago, I 'lost' my clutch about 7 miles from home, the adjustment bolt for the clutch at the transmission end was missing, I forgot to tighten the jamnut.

Luckily I pulled into an Ace Hardware store, and got a metric replacement bolt and nut, for under a dollar.
