Title: VD info
Post by: fastcataz on May 04, 2008, 11:50:17 AM
In another life I knew a pinstriper named Von Dutch. Out and about yesterday I stopped by one of the man's daughters home. "Oh," says she " your bike looks a lot like my Dads favorite one". She showed me this pic, sorry about the reflections...

You weren't cool unless your ride was chopped, channeled, Frenched and Dutched! I recall seeing his bus / workshop go for peanuts at a Barrett Jackson auction a while back. Numbskulls probably didn't have any idea what it was. Pisses me off to no end to see nitwit kids buying "Von Dutch" clothes at the mall and have no clue. Extra points if you can describe lake pipes, baby moons, fender skirts or name 3 of Ed "Big Daddy Roth's" cars!
I,ve got some time to kill end of May fast cat. like to ride out your way.

If you're a Von Dutch fan, go to http://hotrod.com and find a great article on his life and work. Be advised, as Dutch also had a very dark side to his persona.

Lemme see here...

Lakes Pipes - with an "s" were usually side-mounted exhaust pipes with a simple bolted-on block off plate that routed the exhaust through your glaspaks for "legal" sound while cruisin' your local strip. At speed trials on the dry lakes, you pulled the plates and, "Let my lakes pipes roar!" Radical, Man. That flattie is stroked.

Baby Moons - Moon Speed Equip pioneered the simple, smooth, chrome dogbowl hubcaps that looked so cool on painted steelies. Got my Moon Eyes decal in the back.

Fender Skirts - usually found on custom "lead sleds" - pre Bondo, don'cha know. The skirts covered as much of the rear wheel well as possible on these lowered cruisers. Smooth, Daddy-O Duck Cut.

Big - Was the man with his one-off show car customs. Chrome, chrome and a touch more chrome plus way ahead of his time working with the then new age fiberglass and plexi. My old Hot Rod collection has thirty-plus Roth rides. Some current car builders are restoring these trend setting cars to new condition. Way cool.

Auctions suck. I went to school with Craig Jackson, did some work at his Dad's shop in my youth. His old man started a huge thing with the "upper level" auction. I drove cars at the first couple, what a gas for a teenager.
Dutch's legacy nonwithstanding, the man was an artist of the first degree. I am still shocked a bit at the interest in the guy. Got to say, "dark" is an understatement. Cool person to have known. BD Roth is another "out there " sort, very cool in his own way.
If you get up this way Mr. Ridden, a couple days notice and I will have all the time needed to show you Globe and the surrounding area. Let me know.

Montmil, You restore my faith in people, you're right on! Ill bet you have had at least one hot Rod in your past.  FastCat I'll ping ya later this month. Another moto persona with a dark side was Dave Mann who I only knew of through a family connection but we're getting off R65's here. so I'll just say I'm lookin' froward to a nice ride out to Globe on the wee MW and some face time with a fellow owner out in the mining area of AZ.
