Title: Gel Pad Seat Inserts
Post by: Bob_Roller on February 05, 2008, 06:07:20 PM
Found a website  American Motorcycle Specialties, that has 3/4 inch thick gel pads you can cut to your dimensions to add to your seat.

I am contemplating either finding an upholsterer to do it or trying it myself, but using some of
the 2" thick memory foam you can buy for mattress pads these days.

Good luck with the memory foam.  If it is like the Hi-Tech (http://www.seatfoam.com/text/INDEX.htm) foam that Sue and I bought, I don't recommend it.
At least not if you have a skinny, worn-out butt like me.

Mine lasted two seasons, and the 2nd one was not good.  I felt like I could feel the edges of the seat pan.
I am not sure of the densities I bought and used.  I will have to check my invoice.

I am going to get one of the repro solo seats (black) with the luggage rack behind it.
It will be a brand new seat, and if it still does not allow me the comfort I need (and remember from my early years),
then I will take it to someone like Joan's guy, Rich (http://www.richscustomseats.com/), out in Seattle and have them do their custom magic.

Hi Rob,

Yes, I remember your "tale"  (or "tail" ?!?) of woe regarding the seat foam.  I think that the key is
to have some sort of dense foam with very little give for the lower half of the seat stuffing, and just have
the memory foam on the upper 1-2", in hopes of spreading the weight distribution without any "hot spots".
I could be all wet, and maybe the best thing is to just try sending the seat to someone liek Rich or Rick MAyer, etc.
The LS seat is just slightly different so the usual Russell seats, etc won't quite match the tail bodywork.  There is, or was,
or Corbin seat (I think it was Corbin) that was made to fit the LS at one time, but they are extraordinarily rare.

I have heard a lot more not-good about Corbin seats than I have good.  I have never ridden (or sat) on one.  They stay in business, quite effortlessly it appears, so...

As far as Rich's seats go, I would want to do a custom session and have it fit to my butt like Joan did.
That involves getting my bike to Seattle, or flying out with seat in hand, and try to find a R65 with low bars to borrow for the fitting.

But you are correct about a firm base.  I didn't do my own, and the upholsterer may have given me the new stuff right down to the metal base.  It will be interesting to open it up, sometime.

You can mail the seat out here... ;D

How low do those bars need to be? :)   There's a set of S bars in the garage ready to be installed on the Blueberry.

LRB's seat is so far good for me BUT I haven't ridden long days too much. The memory foam that Rob and I used was in 2 separate one inch layers; one more dense than the other. The dense one went in first with the lighter density layer as the topper. I cut straight down 2 inches into the original foam and removed a section that match my butt area ::). There was still original foam below this if I remember correctly. Would be nice to have a Rich's seat and I'd love to have a single seat too.
Maybe this summer, LRB will get a long trip in, say to NC, and I will know whether that memory foam retains any of it's original comfort level.

The memory foam needed is that which is used in wheelchair seats and pilot seats. I thought that is what we were getting Rob and I but I think the softest layer is not the best choice. There were 3 densities to choose from....I just asked the owner what would do for me at my weight.
Now I also bought the buttbuffer last summer and it took me to Cape Breton on the F650GS which has a notoriously uncomfortable seat. Long days just simply seem to add up to numb bum for me. It's the "getting to the numb part" that hurts!!

Cool!  I never expected you to put S bars on Blueberry, but maybe all those rides on Ken's bikes have got you thinking?

Mine are either S bars, or Euro bars.  Whatever the dealer ordered when he ordered my "low bar kit" for the R65 when I bought it new.

Mail my seat out there...yeah, right!
You know Rich wants my butt in Seattle to do the job right! ;)

Where is Rob, indeed.
I think I was becoming sick (2/19).  I was off work Thurs, Fri, Mon and Tue.  I didn't turn on my PC at home for 7 days straight!
I still can't talk.  It has been two weeks since I "went down".  Guess I will call the doctor tomorrow.  I am just barely drinking Pepsi!
I just managed to get down my first two out of a can, tonight...
Lot's of green tea with honey and lemon.

So let's see... no, I am not afraid to fly out (except for in-cabin-airborne bugs!), and if you buy the tatt, that makes it even sweeter!  (I would have been a push-over with my own money - Too Late! ;)).

Butt right now I am trying to figure out which part number to order from Der Meyers!  The hard to mount cool one, or the plain-jane 2nd generation seat (with fancy rear box).  *sigh*

;)

I received my direct deposit tax refund Friday morning, and had a set of emails off to S. Meyer about an hour later.
I have not heard back from them, yet, but I'll bet I get confirmation on Monday.

I would say within two weeks.

Then the measuring and cutting begins.

You are going to be at Ken's in May?   Hopefully I will be stylin!

Well, I am not going to be sending some $$ over to Herr Meyer at this time, but I thought that I'd take a crack at performing my own "seat surgery" on the LS, which
needs a new cover (I have a new one from motobins) and something done to it to replace the fossilized cement, er, "foam", that is in it.  If I am going to ride it for more
than 1 hour, something must be done to it.  I found this website that seems to have some good suggestions/pointers and they also sell a variety of foam materials to use.

Anyone else tried these guys ?
