Took the seat from my oilhead into a local shop run out of a guy's home, having the foam replaced with a gel insert, and then covered with a 'carbon fiber' look breathable vinyl cover.
I've heard comments on gel inserts or pads just not living up to people's expectations.
After visiting this shop, I have found the most probable cause for these complaints.
The type of gel that is used for the most part is pretty pathetic, he had the gel insets from Sargent, Russell, and a few other well known brands, and at best the gel was 1/4-5/16 ths of an inch thick, and was of a too compliant consistency, you could almost poke your finger through them.
The type of gel that he uses is an orthopedic gel, I guess somewhat similar to the gel inserts for shoes, it's 5/8ths of an inch thick.
So if you have a seat re-done, and want a gel insert, check to see what kind of gel is being used, before committing to having it done.
The R65 seat is in need of a re-cover as well, this relentless sun in Phoenix really is tough on seats.

Got the seat back from the shop, and what a world of difference there is !!!!
I kick myself for not having this done a few years ago !!!
I'm going to get out on the road this weekend for sure now !!!

I've got a new seat cover from motobins for my LS, and am going to attempt to recover it this winter.
I've thought about the gel seat pads, but a significant part of the riding season up here is fairly chilly, and I can't help but think that the gel material might be pretty 'stiff' or hard, while riding in 30-40 degree temps. Curious to see how it works for you...

Put 200 miles on the oilhead today, longest ride since having the seat reworked, and it is a significant improvement over the stock seat.
I felt that I could ride another 400 miles with no problem.
I thought it was a bit pricey to get the seat redone ($200), but a stock seat from BMW is right around the same price, I should have had the seat done a few years earlier.
The seat on the R65 is going to get redone with the gel insert as well, in the next few months
