Hi

I have recently acquired a 1979 R65 as a project. No MOT test certificate, but with a new battery and fresh petrol, it started first time after sitting for 3.5 years so I'm optimistic!
Lights etc work but it needs some seat surgery and a master cylinder.

The bike has had a fairly eventful life with all sorts of non standard bits, so I look forward to quizzing the forum on technical issues.

I was sort of looking for another bike since I sold my R1150RS last year to clear some debt before my daughter was born :'(. This promises to be a bit different. That's probably better for my licence!

Congrats to you for daughter & R65.
Don't be too hasty about replacing the MC. Does it stop you OK? They have lots of parts available to fix em. MC pricey, less one finds one used. I have some issues with my MC. Have replaced a few parts & now very minor leak. Next will replace Oring at bottom of reseviour. Hope its the fix. Such a small leak compared to before.

Welcome Ian, you're going to have a great time on your R65, you just have to adjust your riding a little. I've got an '02 R1150R and an '81 R65, there's a lot of difference between them, but the R65 still shines on twisting turning back roads, the bike will surprise you. Parts are available, and there is a lot of expertise out there on maintaining them, and they are quite user friendly to work on.

Buy a rebuild kit for that master cylinder. They are not difficult to install. Even though your R65 isn't as fast as the newer BMW, I'm sure you will find it very peppy. Ask all the questions you want, there are lots of knowledgeable people on this board.......oh yeah.....welcome......Dew.

Your R65 is very peppy due to its small/light pistons and a shorter stroke engine, than a bigger air head. With that said it is the match of a larger displacement air head preformance wise up to 80 mph or so. You will love that bike.
