Title: My BMW R 71 Replica is running......
Post by: ScottColumbus on December 26, 2006, 02:09:08 PM
..... for the first time! :D

Hi folks!

I´m very happy, because the R71 Replica, which I try to restore, has made a big step forward to get on the road. On 12-23-06, 6:00 PM,  it was the first time that the Seitenventiler-engine was running.

I bought the motorcycle on February this year and have spent hundreds, maybe thousands of hours in my garage to get it reanimated. I´ve had many failures, bloody fingers, grumbling wives, empty purses, badly surprises and sleepless nights.

I´ve ripped off all russian screws (Stalin´s revenge ;D), wiring harnesses, bowden cables and roller bearings. I´ve done all by myself. The motorcycle was painted with spray cans.

But now, all pain is forgotten. :) After the fourth kick on her kickstarter, the engine started to run. It was a great feeling for me.

So here are some pictures.

I got my Ludmilla in this condition. I bought the bike on ebay, but I was shocked when I saw it for the first time:

But - as I said - all pain is forgotten now.  :D I took this pictures on the 26th of December on a cold but shiny morning.

Fantastic, Dirk!  Congratulations!!  It will be great to see you document the progress you make in getting the bike fully restored.  You're a great photographer!  I wish I were lucky enough to have a bike like yours to restore.  The one old Beemer I have always wanted to own is an R26 or R27.  I love the idea of a shaft-driven single cylinder bike, and one of these days, I intend to own one!  I think it would be so cool to ride around one one of those beauties!  8-)

Dirk, feels good, don't it!   [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]  You're making excellent progress.

My wife won't look at your junk yard pix anymore because she says it ain't fair.  ;)

John, yes, the old single-cylinders look great. But I wonder that you like these small engines. I´ve allways thought that the 250cc engines don´t fit to "the American way of Life. You have Harley Davidsons with huge and mighty engines. The small beemers seem to be toys, compared to your big bikes, dont´t they? ;D

Yeah, Dirk, for most folks a 250cc bike would be just too small for riding around on.  I don't think I would want a 250cc size bike as my primary source of transporation, but I think it would be a blast to have one to cruise around on on those lazy summer afternoons when you don't have anywhere in particular to go and don't have to be in any sort of rush to get there!  8-)

Rob, I wish you would have told a little bit more. How do you mean that?
Title: Re: My BMW R 71 Replica is running......

Well, we chose to ride BMW's smallest twin, for the most part.  I think that explains a lot of my remark.

I, for one, am not a physically large person, and I have always gravitated toward smaller things.
I remember when I first graduated from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, my father opened the catalog and asked me which sheath knife (hunting knife) I wanted.  I chose the smaller of the two...

I love my small cars (currently a '88 Honda Civic), and I am disgusted by the phrase "bigger is better".

But don't go by me.  I am weird.

Which one do you have, Rob? For 135 film? I own a 35PL but I am not satisfied. I prefer the Rollei 35 for taking along as my worker. I heard the 35GT is better than the PL wich has problems with the timing.
 :)

Hi guys and gals,

I wish you a happy new year!  :)

Here are some pictures of the process of getting the russian monster restored. Hope you like it. :)

When I got the K750, my wife was very angry >:(. But she got the order to help me with the restoration, and she even had fun thereby.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F1024_6132396261373335.jpg&hash=46bef1bef84943837d1572987c20e52e6b6293f8)

The only way to handle all that junk was to ripp it off.

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F1024_3766613362316630.jpg&hash=a3542fe42069ca4e4e01ebdb673cd9b01289b2c2)

And I  had spare parts for worse times. ;)

(https://bmwr65.org/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffoto.arcor-online.net%2Fpalb%2Falben%2F97%2F4118197%2F1024_3865396563613238.jpg&hash=f7c692f152e2bf730e6bf0382dcfc07ba2424109)

Now there´s no rust left on the frame:

Dirk, I'm glad that you are still alive, I recognize that "look" on your wife's face  :o  and it usually equates to a cold supper and a sphere of evil "vibes" once within 10 feet or so of said spouse!   :P

Nice job, Dirk!  I really like the clamp that you used to free the oil filler cap!

Fantastic, Dirk! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  Color me green with envy!  Do you have an estimate of about how much this resoration has cost you? I'm just curious.... (or nosy, depending on your point of view) ::)

Hi John,

thanks for your compliment.  :)
It´s not very expensive to restore a russian bike. Russian spare parts are very, very cheap. You can´t compare that with BMW parts; neither the prices nor the quality. I´ve paid about 600 $ for all parts.  ;D

These carbs are extact copies of the pre-war Graetzin carburators. They are made in China. Both cost less than 100$.

Say, that's a nice looking "family" you have there, Dirk!   ;D

Wish I had relatives who looked as good as yours who lived in my garage!   ::)

Keep up the good work!

Tschüß!

Wow.............. you really did a fantastic job.............. has to make ya feel good! I love to see the old machines brought back to life...saved from the graveyard. You are now a Shaman having conjured a ghost from the past. We are the tribe of ghost riders.
Hey I have a R27....... 250cc and it is a cool bike for town and not to shabby on the highway. It was made to cruise at the old 55 mph speed limit..........will cruise 60 no problem, just not much steam left for anything like passing.  BMW says it will do 80..........and it would................going down a steep hill with a strong tailwind. But it is really a good bike.........small  nimble, weights about 350 pounds with 18 hp and if your short like me you can get both feet down. Don’t bad mouth those babies they are good bikes. Anyway.......ya did good!

Yes, the old single-cylinder BMW´s are nice bikes. And altough they have only 250cc, they´ve got sound like a real big bike. It´s sad how the new generation of BMW-Boxerwork bikes sounds.
