Gentlemen: After searching archives with no luck, my question...
When using center stand on level ground, bike will fall over with a one-finger slight pressure push. I need to shim right side 3/8 inch to balance it. Viewing photos, does this look like correct angle for a '79 R65? When jacked up and center stand free, I can grab and wiggle the stand some. The bushings seem to be tight, but perhaps are worn. Per the third photo, do I need to weld an 1/8" bead at the top where it hits the frame to straighten up the stand angle? Please, any suggestions short of replacing the center stand very much appreciated.
I know, it's warming up and nobody is reading the forums. But, when it rains, please advise.

that centerstand is vastly over-rotated, but the wear at the top does not look at all bad. I suspect the bushes are shot.
They are cheap so buy a pair and book yourself in for a maintenance half-hour (which, if as I suspect that all is wrong is the bushes, is all it is going to take you)

What about the stand itself? Is it possible that the holes in the stand might be worn? I know that the bushing is supposed to be the wearing surface, but we know how cheaply made the actual stand is...

Bushings ordered....perhaps next week I'll see if this helps cure the problem.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if some centre stands were too far overcentre when they left the factory. Mine was bad after only 6000 miles. The Germans would have tended towards stability every time at the expense of ease of use. Lets hope it's the bushes but I suspect you might still have to build up the stand contact points with weld even when the bushes are done.
The side stand on the early models is interesting. Do you realise it comes apart with the use of no tools exept what is need to remove the springs. I shimmed the side stand pivot opening to take some slop out of it.

Update:
Replaced the bushings and one of the springs and have achieved success!
I still might get a plate welded to both bottoms, just to prevent total wear of the tubing.

Yep, and that means that it is capable of simply flying to pieces on the road - and not one part, other than the stand itself and the springs is still available.
In the mid-90s I attempted to order a new sidestand for the wife's R65/80 as the original had developed cracks. BMW had none in stock, but apparently the part was still within their "umbrella" period as they pulled the moulds from archives and sent them to the foundry that produced them in the first place and had a few made, one of which eventually came to us.
At about this point I discovered that none of the other mounting parts are still available - the 79~80 R65 side stand being utterly unique.
Irritatingly BMW still list the 81 forward pivot bush as also fitting the 79~80 model. It does not.
Perhaps one day I will find someone who has all the fixing hardware and are not using it or are wrecking the bike, but that is the only way to get those parts now. I used a cut down high-tensile bolt to mount the stand on her bike and fabricated some alloy plates to hold the springs.
