Hi, I'm a new member.
I have a 1989 R65.
Is it easy to get parts for these machines?
Thanks

I have never had any problems getting parts for my 1980 R65 and it took a few to get it rolling again. My R65 sat under a tarp behind a garage for about 20 years, had to re do the brake system twice to get it right. The local BMW dealer is always a good source of information, parts but mine is 50 miles away. The parts manager of you local BMW dealer is a very good man to know. So, rather than drive 50 miles, I often order parts from A&S BMW motorcycles.........www.ascycles.com . Their service has always been good. Welcome, have fun on your bike....mine is a absolute hoot.

It depends on whether you are in a hurry, or not... If you are not in a big hurry, or are laying in maintenance supplies, then http://www.chicagobmwmotorcycles.com has your best prices. A&S has been mentioned along with Boxerworks, Capitol, Max BMW, etc. Sometimes you can get a good bargain at www.motobins.com - even with shipping and exchange rate. I also buy some stuff from http://www.euromotoelectrics.com and http://www.eurotechmotorsports.com. And, there's always e-Bay...
There are very few parts that cannot still be ordered brand new, that's one of the best things about Beemers, unlike most jap brands.

So far I have ordered all my parts from my BMW car dealer. The parts guys like to look up something different. All of there computer software has the information for bikes by the last 7 of the VIN.

The easiest way to order parts is to already have the part number in hand.
For that you want to go to one of the online sources that make this available.
Real OEM (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=&kind=M&arch=0)is my personal favorite. It let's you cut and paste the part number (handy for dropping it into Chicago BMW's price searcher).
For the later R65's ('85-'95) you want to use the 'Current' Archive, as opposed to the early models, which for some reason are grouped with the pre-1970 models in the 'Archive' Archive. But the easiest way is to find the last 7 numbers of your VIN and plug them in in the appropriate field.
Max BMW (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/fiche.asp) is also a good one. Their pictures are reverse color (white on black), which is a little weird, but if you zoom in, it reverses back to black on white. They also have a VIN entry field and cut & paste ability.
A&S (http://ascycles.com/illustrated_parts_catalog_main.aspx) has their own version, but it is not only less user friendly, I don't even see an entry for the '85-'95 models.
My personal favorite is the paperback Parts Book that you can still get by special order (I am also a book collector...). I bought mine about the 2nd year I had the bike. Capital Cycle has them for up to 1984, after that you will need a fiche reader.
But Mark Huggett (http://www.bmwbike.com/index.php?l=english&n=1&c=23) in Switzerland has them, with the appropriate rate exchange and shipping.

If you are new to BMW's, you may find that the majority of the motorcycle dealers don't really want to give the airhead riders the time of day. There are exceptions, of course, and if you are lucky, you live as close as only 50 miles from one.

As your profile shows you are in Scotland the easiest place for parts is
Moto-Bins (http://www.motobins.co.uk)
or
Motorworks (http://www.motorworks.co.uk/bmw/home.php)
or
James Sherlock (http://www.james-sherlock.co.uk)
all stock new air-head parts and all have second hand parts available as well. The last two businesses don't sell to us folks over this side of the pond, but you shouldn't have any problems.

Oops! I forgot he was in Scotland! Thanks, again, Chris!

John, one other source you might want to check is Hammersley BMW. They also have a parts fiche and their prices are below BMW retail, more in line with Chicago BMW and less than Max's or A&S. I know they've also shipped recently to several Australian members here, so wouldn't think Scotland would be a problem (just don't quote me on that...).
The link to their parts fiche pages is below.
Good luck.
