I will be boldly going where I haven't gone before tomorrow!
100g pack of ROCOL dry moly paste, long artist brush and tricorder in hand :)
Hopefully this will improve the occasional dodgy 3rd to 2nd downshift which sometime grinds the gears of find a false neutral. Also 1st has become troublesome to engage from neutral occasionally, despite paddling the bike forwards.
Episode 2 later tomorrow.

I don't know if I would use a dry moly product .
I used some moly spray on one spline lube it didn't last a year .
I now mix up my own lubricant a thick moly paste and wheel bearing grease .
I use it on rear wheel splines as well .

Looks in good condition, no rust. Bolts have bot been out for 20+ years though!
ROCOL 'Dry' paste is a very thick grease with high moly content so we should be good.

Not sure I notice any change, possibly a bit better from neutral to first. I'll know once i've done a few miles. Potential worry removed though.
I think the problem is me. If I am on the ball and concentrate on preload and then a fast positive change - then all is good. it's when I mis-time it or dither and change at low revs (2,000 or below) we have the problem.
I have broken car gearboxes in my time :-[ A Saab turbo (260BHP version twice chasing Audis or Astons), a Saab diesel (second gear snap-ring same fault as the turbo), Vauxhall Cavalier (cooked it chasing something!). Never broken a bike box, yet!

when I first got my bike
false neutral and bad shifting was the norm
but after 50000 miles I rarely have any issue shifting

When starting off, neutral into first is definitely easier. No paddling.
3rd to 2nd is fine if I do it right. Hopefully I can master it in less than 50,000 miles!
