Title: Brembo Brakes
Post by: orforester on December 18, 2019, 05:06:45 PM: I got this 1980 R65 not LS, just R65. I dislike ATE brakes and found a disk and right hand Brembo and a left hand one, but went to attach the left one and it does not fit? Is there a specific BMW # for Left brake Brembo or am I stuck with a ATE for both sides? I have rebuilt ATE brakes, but they are a very poor design in my opinion.

Post by: Barry on December 19, 2019, 03:33:25 AM: If it was the correct Brembo F08 caliper it would be virtually identical to the Ate, same mounting and same 36mm piston size which is specific to the R65, other Brembos for airheads tend to be 38mm piston.

Post by: tiggum on December 19, 2019, 04:29:25 PM: I believe that the 38 mm Brembo calipers were used on the K bikes and the mono lever airheads, whereas our twin shock R65's had the 36 mm calipers.

Don't know about the right side

I do know their is a left and right side because of the bleeder location

1. RH side has aluminium top-hat spacers which reduce the bore to that of the bolt and shift the caliper out a mm or so to centralise the pads on the disc.
2. LH side has no spacers and the bore of the holes fits the bolts.

t!he aluminum top hat spacers are (were ? ) available in a range ot thicknesses for the top hat in order to perfectly center the rotors in the calipers. There are also various thicknesses shims to put under the rotors at the wheel hub to achieve the same purpose. Once you have perfectly centered the LH caliper on the rotor, you center the right one using the proper spacer on the caliper. And all is well !
