Title: Disassembling Electronic Tachometers
Post by: jp9094 on September 06, 2019, 05:51:33 PM
Is there a trick/secret to removing the round plug in the back of these units??

Am installing the rebuilt original Speedo on my r65 LS and thought I would upgrade the instrument bulb to an LED in the Tacho as well. Made a halfhearted attempt to remove the round connector without success. Any assistance appreciated !

TIA

A flat blade screwdiver, get it between the connector and the back cover and rock the screwdriver a bit, when it starts moving, move to another spot and do the same thing all around the connector .

There is a thread somewhere on here with good advice on replacing the bulbs with LEDS. If you use the standard wedge bulb with the tails full length and wrapped around to the other side of the bulb it will short out and probably burn the track on the board.

Go very steady as that black plastic plug is apt to be brittle. If you break it the only way you get another is to obtain and cannibalise another r65 wiring harness.

It is VERY similar to an old electronic valve base and I thought I was on a winner when I broke mine, but the diameter was very slightly different. I repaired mine by tuning up a very thin "collar" to hold it back together and lots and lots of superglue.
