Title: Repairing upper (black) fairing on r65 LS
Post by: jp9094 on July 15, 2019, 02:35:51 PM
When my wife knocked over the bike when parking last winter the 2 tabs that hold the upper (black) fairing on the  r 65 LS nacelle were broken off (it is now secured with black electrical tape). As luck would have it I actually found them and they are now sitting on my desk.

The stars have aligned and my finances now allow me to have my original speedo rebuilt so will soon have an excuse to remove the fairing to replace the rebuilt speedo.

My question is how can I securely re attach the 2 tabs to the nacelle? What kind of material is is made of, as this may help in finding a way to reattach the tabs. Any and all advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have struggled to find something to fix my tail light mount nothing seems to stick to the plastic. At the moment I have liquid nails all over it. Next time i am going to drill holes through it so the glue acts like a strap between the 2 parts.

I'm getting started on this on my recently acquired LS .
I did this on my other roadworthy LS .
I made a stip of thin metal, about an inch wide and about six inches long .
I drilled a hole at one end to fit on the bolt that holds the headlight bucket to it's mounting bracket .
I drilled a small hole in the upper black fairing in the area in line with the headlight bolt .
Drilled a hole in the metal strap and used a tinnerman nut on the hole, then put a small sheet metal screw into the tinnerman nut  .

You may not find a nut for a sheet metal screw, there are nuts for machine screws .
Been on my other LS for 9 years, no issues so far .
If you don't have the rubber 'gasket ' that goes  the around the headlight, a thick foam strip will suffice .

With both my first LS and the current one I've re-created the tabs using a fibreglass repair kit. You probably have it a bit easier given that you have the tabs, you probably just need to build up some bulk behind them with fibreglass to hold them in place.

Can some one post a picture of the tabs.

Mine were missing when I got the bike and I went another way to secure the cover. If I could recreate the tabs it would be better for me but I don't know what the original set up looked like

Thanks

Pic of RHS fibreglass tab. I think it's longer than the original.

Second pic of my bodgy fibreglass backing. After putting the fibreglass on I shaped the tab using a file.
