Title: Safety Bars
Post by: mrclubike on January 01, 2019, 06:44:25 PM
I put these on today

I was happy when I found these because they are supposed to fit all Airheads

I am a little concerned about them blocking air from the heads but the opinion on ADV rider has been its not a problem

I had to lower them a little so I could get the leg guards on at the same time

I take the leg guards off in the spring
They are just to hot in the warmer climates but the are a God send when it is cold

I put a set of Luftmeister  crash ars on my '81 R65 in '82, looks the same as your set .
No issues with engine cooling .
I had mounts welded to the bars for driving lights .
I put PIAA 40 driving lights on .

There's just been a long debate on the Airheads list about safety bars with several claiming they can bend the frame in a spill due to the long leverage on the mounting points. If that's the case, replacing valve covers after a spill would be much cheaper.

My bike came with them fitted but I removed them 12 years ago. What persuaded me to do that at the time was  Duane Ausherman's view that they could cause a high side in in spill.  He claimed that every bike that came into his shop after a spill had higher repair costs if it had safety bars.  Secondly the extra width wasn't helping squeeze past my car in the garage. I hadn't even thought about bending the frame.
