Good afternoon.
I had some time off recently, so my attempts to revive the R65 have begun. There is a new dyna coil, rebuilt carbs, rebuilt bean can, new points n plugs and some fresh gas. The tank isn't on yet, but i filled the float bowels for turn over. New battery.
Turned over very eagerly...some chuffing and banging. It didn't actually run, but I think it will. Both header pipes were hot to touch, although the right seemed hotter than the left. I think I should set static timing...which leads me to....how do I do that then?
As far as I know so far...you get the S mark in the observation hole, but what else should I do at this stage before I turn over again?
Love working on the airhead again!!

I disconnect the black wire at the bean can and use an ohm meter or for preference an electrical buzzer between the spade connection and earth (across the points). Some people say they jog the engine around using the rear wheel but I haven't the fainest idea how it's possible to do that with any accuracy. I use an Allen key in the rotor bolt with the plugs out. The points should open just as the S mark lines up with the notch in the window. I then rotate one revolution to check the other lobe on the points cam.

Cough...splutter....ignition....pinking....cough...splutter.....there is life there......why won't she kick in...!! It wants to go...points set/both pipes are hot to touch, so there is ignition...but won't run to idle.
What else should I be doing?

Possibly...so that's why I replaced the coils with the Dyna, new plugs went in and new points. I'll look again at the spark....big, fat and blue yeah? :o

It certainly looks the part..nice and blue (viewed in the dark). There is a new condenser on the bean can; I say new, but that was 8 years ago. What would be the symptoms of a failing condenser?

Could it be the "new Dyna coil" after all? It's the green one.
Spark looks good though.....head scratch.....

PS: I would put a rubber in your hole to stop water/dust debris etc.....please don't take that the wrong way!

If you're observing good spark I'd say the ignition is working ok.
I would next check for correct valve lash and that there is the correct amount of fuel in the float bowls. Set the idle mix screw each side at 3/4 turn out from light seating and the throttle stop screws 1 full turn on from where they start touching the butterfly valve.
I'd also check that the choke is working, it makes starting a lot easier.
You've probably done all this already, just my 2p worth. If all these check out it should really be starting ok. The only thing left is the air intake, or revisiting the carb rebuild.
Green Dyna is the correct one for points.
Pretty sure I can spot a rubber timing hole bung in Mrclubike's 'front hole'.

I'd reckon a good candidate for non start with good spark is clogged start enriching jets (they are in the float bowls). To test for this buy an aerosol can of starting fluid (in Australia "Start Ya Bastard" outsells all other brands in spite of the contents being identical and a slightly higher price, buggered if I know why :-).
Anyway, see f you can get it running on starter fluid and if you come back several times during the course of the day and it starts fine, but will not start the next day, book yourself in for a carb refresh, but clean those pesky starting jets first and see what happens. BTW, contrary to any other jet you might handle, you do not need to be too gentle with these, they do after all only come into play when the choke ;ever is operated - clean them with oxy set jet files. If your bike sudden;y starts properly, order a complete carb rebuild kit and have at it.

Well....half way between running and not running! Gave it some serious cranking, and for a few seconds it ran unaided..but then chuffed out. Did this a few times, but just wouldn't keep going. Def wants to go as far as the ignition goes. Both sides firing and blowing. Fuel is getting through...enrichener circuit? Could be.
Battery is charging again now...and the elderly lady opposite is recovering from the disturbance!?
I'm feeling positive though.....
A strange occurrence: the bike is on an optimiser. When I came to it today, there was no signs of any lights anywhere. Turned over fine. Oil pressure light, neutral light and charging light all operating, but nothing else.
Fuses looked OK. Gave the relays a tap, but nothing. Strange....
