Hi again - can anyone advise me how to fit these to the petrol rank?

They go on each side at the very back of the tunnel with the thick sides up. Glued on.

As above.
Make sure the bottom edge of the thin side is well glued down or it will "pick up" when the tank is pushed down over the frame tubes.
Take it you have the front rubber ?

Hi two cylinder - so the rubber is thicker on one end. So a couple of questions.

Which way up is the thicker end?

At yet very back of the tunnel you say - would that be flush with the seam of the tank at the very rear - that is by the front of the seat?

They don't go all the way to the rear. Perhaps 2-3 inches forward.
They are "right" and "left" handed, so keep that in mind when orienting them.
The thick part goes topside because that is supporting the weight.

On all I've messed with you should see a slight depression/indentation in the tank where they go.

The main problem I had with mine was not finding the exact spot to put them but to find a glue that stick to them AND the tank.
I still have to find something adequate....

Hi George - I use Black Silastic to stick rubber to my bike - after 24 hours its a good bond and can be removed if necessary - I have used it to stick the rubber knee pads to my tank and I've also used it to stick these tank rubber mounts too
.
Even though it's not a permanent glue type thing - I find it good enough to hold everything in place - which I'm glad about because I realised I had stuck the rubber mounts on upside-down initially - so I could get them off and redo them.....

I gave up trying to glue mine and got used to watching for them to drop when I removed the tank.
Just don't forget if you are doing it on the side of the road...

I realized a while back after looking at the fiche that I never had these pieces. I have not seen any bad spots on the bottom of the tank so hopefully nothing negative has happened.
Max BMW shows $18 per piece for these. Do you all know of a place with a better price? Should I just cram some foam up there? Not worry about it since it hasn't been there for a while anyway?
I'm kind of in the same spot as the OP, I have a general idea where they go, but I don't have the pieces as a reference to see what I could substitute.

They are expensive for a simple bit of rubber. Some high density foam might work but it tends to collapse over time so you would have to start with it being thicker than the rubber mounts. With nothing in there I'm surprised the tank doesn't rattle or make contact with the various electrical bits.
As far as the dimensions are concerned they are effectively dictated by the bale clip. If the mounts are too thick you will struggle to fasten the clip. If too thin the clip will be loose.

Thanks Barry. I was thinking the same thing about the rattling but the tank is remarkably solid. I can force it to rock back and forth by hand but, otherwise, it sits pretty securely. I'll look for those indents that Justin mentioned and see if I can get some foam pieces in there, temporarily if nothing else. I'll need to get under there again soon so I'm going to check closely for any wear underneath but I don't recall seeing any the last time I had it off.

Actually, the new rubber BMW supply is quite thick and make the clip hard to set.
And it is not the same rubber as the original (lost by the painter...).
Do not apply brute force on top of the tank to force the clip on the frame.... Otherwise you'll regret it. Do not ask me why I say so ....

BPT, I have used a pool noodle cut lengthwise. I will eventually crush down, at which point cut a new length. It cost about a dollar and you will get about 4 years out of a single noodle. At this time you will find the original bumper has been living under your rolling tool box for the last 4 years ;D

Funny you say that, I am pretty sure I saw at least one of them in the battery area. The way it was crammed in there it almost looked like someone had put it there on purpose to keep the battery from moving. It may still be floating around somewhere, I was going to look for it again.
And I didn't think of the pool noodle but was going to look at work tomorrow in some of our packing crates. Some of them have some heavy duty versions of that same stuff in them. I figured the same as you, it'll do until it squishes down, then I'll just replace it with another piece. That's the airhead way, right??

Mine wears pieces of insertion rubber purchased at the local Rubber Shop. Enough to do around 20 R65s cost me less that $10.
Mind you, the rubber is not entirely necessary and in my view could be entirely deleted if you pout a thin piece of rubber on the top of the frame spine were the retaining clip goes - between the rubber on the clip and the rubber on the spine, the tank is well enough insulated from vibration and shock.
