Title: Keys for BMW Moto Cases
Post by: jp9094 on December 07, 2017, 10:17:57 PM
Would anybody know where I can obtain a key for my BMW Moto cases? They are the old ones with the rectangular BMW Badges and reflectors. The key code on the locks is 056.  Any and all hep appreciated.

PS, I posted this 2 days ago and then the forum seemed to have gone "off the air" until just now! When it came back, my last 2 posts were nowhere to be found.

Many thanks in advance,

You cannot buy new ones from BMW, they went NLA a long time ago. Motobins did have some but if they still do they are no longer advertising them.

Your options are:-

1/. Find a BMW shop that still has stock
2/. find a BMW owner who has the right keys and no longer needs them
3/. Take your cases to a locksmith and have them modified to "any key" - this isn't as sill as it sounds as the locks are so flimsy they only deter fairly honest people.
4/. Have a locksmith make a new key for you - they are a simple lock and a locksmith that knows their stuff shouldn't take more than 10~15 minutes to make a key.
5/. Employ the  "Mr Bean Solution" - see below

Kinda pricey for a luggage key, but looks the "REAL DEAL"

As I posted under the announcement section there could possibly be some data loss.  If posts were made between the time the last backup was made and the server went down they would be lost.

Wilcom, many thanks for the link! Have made the purchase. Not as expensive as the English site I found (14 pounds plus postage AND the do not ship to the USA)!! Will let all know if it works when it arrives.

Thanks to all who replied.

I believe I paid $15 for a key from Larry Stonestreet ("Stoner"). He has some number of them.

I also made a few out of old hacksaw blades--as noted above, the locks aren't exactly sophisticated. A little time with a dremel will get you there.

As per the ebay link in Wilcom's post.

I know the person selling these keys.  Yes they are original BMW keys and to the best of my knowledge they are/were the last known stocks of Type 1 keys in the BMW US parts inventory.

Once they are gone, there are no more.  So get in quick.

I've had good luck with a locksmith shop, needed replacement keys for my '87 Guzzi, key blanks were NLA .

I walked out with 5 replacement keys in less than 10 minutes .

Of course within a year the original lock on the bike failed and needed to get a replacement lock !! ;D

The Key arrived and worked perfectly! Only took 3 days West to East Coast. Next is to try and get copies made!

Thanks again to all!
