Title: Brake Fluid
Post by: Bob_Roller on November 17, 2017, 05:11:15 PM
All the bikes need brake fluid, clutch fluid replaced .

I've used Castrol brake fluid  ( LMA GT 3/4)  for about 40 years, no longer available in retail outlets locally, I really don't want to special order brake fluid .

I have 1 unopened quart bottle left, I might be able to do all of the bikes with what I have .

Any viewpoints  on what may be a suitable alternative ??

All of what I've seen, is off brand fluid and not real comfortable with them .

My local shop likes Bell Ray for most fluids when I've asked what they recommend. From what I've seen it's pretty commonly available and the price is in line with other brands.

I'm wondering myself since it's about time for me to change and refresh.  I was going to use the Bell Ray since I can get it, unless someone here has a better recommendation.

I saw Pentosin at an auto parts store, Pep Boys, no idea how wide spread this store is in the US .

Never heard of them before .

I thought Pep Boys was nationwide?  We have them in Texas and I've seen them up north (Ohio).  I thought they were a pretty big chain.

They're one of those that sell auto parts but also work on cars.

A quick google search shows the Pentosin at Advanced Auto and Autozone also.  And very good reviews on Amazon. Is $15 a good price?  Interesting that more than one review talks about how nice the bottle is to pour with.

Thanks for that suggestion MrClubike. I'll check that out.  The reviews are really good on it.  Seems like I've seen that name on something at VW shop.  I like the German stuff if it's not difficult to get a ridiculously priced.

I just ordered (couple months ago) the Castrol from Summit Racing - $13.97/qt.  Like Bob I've used it since the invention of dirt.  I started using it after the first MGB I bought and was warned that I would be rebuilding all the brake hydraulics if I used anything else.
