Title: Help identifying muffler
Post by: drewsonofdean on October 19, 2017, 10:45:54 PM
Hi all,

I am pretty sure this is the stock header pipes, but wondering what muffler this is?

I love the sound of this but can't identify it!!

It's a short reverse cone megaphone. It's a common after market item and there have been any number of them over the years so other than asking the guy who built the bike there's little chance you'll pin down the manufacturer of that particular one.

I bought a pair to use on a project in 2009 from Old Bike Barn, but I don't see them on their website anymore.

My invoice called them "Shorty Reverse Cone Megaphone Muffler".
Google that and you should find something.
Yep, first hit is exactly what I had, at the same price:

The ones I had, you could look straight through them.  I never did hear them on a bike, but they looked like trouble.

This is what I was trying to copy, at the time:

Well, I bought these a few days ago:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GU25XE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Didn't realize that the OEM mufflers are contoured to the bike (they are bent so they appear parallel from the back).

These new ones just stick out....

Is it realistic to find an aftermarket exhaust that is contoured as well? Or should I just stick with these...

Thx

MAC makes mufflers and pipes for Airheads.  The mufflers are similar in shape to the stockers but "throatier."

I checked the MAC site, the only that fits my gear doesn't fit an r65 for some reason, but all other models are fine. lol!!

To my mind, the "gold standard" of R65 exhausts are Staintune and Keihan.  They offer stock appearing hardware that fits correctly.  I have Keihan mufflers on mine, and they are a little throatier than normal.  I can't speak to the Staintune sound.  Of the two, the Keihan was slightly less cost / quicker shipping.
