Title: What does a new float weight
Post by: mrclubike on September 29, 2017, 09:01:47 PM
I know Tony has posted this already
I have one that looks new and is a gram less than 3 year old ones that I am using now
I am hoping that I only need to buy just one

I bought one last week from Motorworks and on my scale, which weighs in increments of 1 gram, it flicked between 12 and 13 grams,  so 12.5!?
The one it replaced was 17 grams and a total sinker. The other old one i left in was also between 12 and 13 grams.

I weighed my last new pair from Motobins in the science lab at work on a super accurate scale at 12.495 and 12.497 grams.  I think we can assume 12.5 grams is the correct weight.

It was also my experience that 17 grams is a sinker.  The really weird thing is that approx. half of the weight gain is permanent. You can dry them out for years and they will never be 12.5 grams again.  They do lose enough weight to be usable in an emergency but I don't how long it would take for them to gain weight again.

I am not at home now
But I am sure the newer one is 12.5 grams and my old ones are 13.5
I was thinking 1gram over would be time to replace them

While not ideal to have different weight floats I would have no worries about using a 13.5 gram float. I found you can go up to 2.5 grams overweight by compensating the float setting to give equal fuel levels.  If using the fuel level in a removed bowl method aim for 2mm lower level with 15 gram float compared to the 12.5 gram one.

Just so everyone knows a scale to weight the floats are cheap
The one I use only cost  $10.00 USD
