Title: Solo Seat
Post by: Julio A. on October 02, 2016, 12:25:54 PM
Hello Guys, I want to do a solo seat conversion to my R65. Does anyone know how the original OEM seat attaches to the bike? I'll have a custom seat pan done, but I still want to retain the original swiveling feature.

Might there be a police solo seat shown in the parts fiche. Check R80s, too, as they may be all same all same.

An ex-member on this forum, Rob Valdez got an OEM solo seat from an eBay seller SMeier ( Meyer ), or some spelling like that, from what I can remember it was for first gen bikes and the seat was rigidly attached, no hinged feature .

He also added a cargo rack behind the solo seat, made the bike more practical as an everyday use bike, without the usual limitations on what you could carry on it .

Rob left here about 3 years ago, at the time he was active on Boxerworks, don't know if he used the same name there or not .

He may be able to answer your questions, if he's still there .

Edit : I think he used Tom Farr as a username .

That's the eBay seller !!!!!

Business name, is S. Meyer .

I've made a few purchases in the past from this seller, I  had no issues with the purchases or shipping .

Shipping was only 6 days from Germany to Phoenix .

I'd like to see a picture of that…any mods needed?
(I know its been a while.. :))

Here's a place (for reference) that sells what looks like the half seat and also the rack to match.
I'm curious about this also.  I like the idea of the solo seat and rack but I wouldn't want to lose the function of getting underneath it.
I'm guessing you all are talking about opening up the seat when you talk about the "swivel"?

Ok, I've hunted for some nice clear photos and the blunt truth is I don't have any.

The mod was done around 1987 - and involved a K100 Police seat and a rear "utility" rack from a R80G/S, the one hinge loop on the seat more or less lined up with the r65 forward hinge pin. Some scrap steel was made up to bolt to the utility rack and the rear facing K100 seat lock was used.

Within weeks the seat hinge and the lock broke because I was not smart enough to check the alignment with the R65 subframe rails. Neither the hinge or the lock has ever been repaired and ever since the seat has been retained with a luggage strap - it works well enough so the wife has never complained and I've never bothered to fix it.

There wasa recent thread on rear wheel removal which has the best photos I have of the seat/rack arrangement.

Please note I have in the last 24 hours bought a r65 seat and intend to fit it as the solo seat was fitted to satisfay then current registration requirements in our state - those requirements no longer exist.

I messaged S Meyer via ebay about the seat and rack. I was following a link similar to those above with the G/S seats. I asked him about hardware and if the seat was still usable as normal - with the the hinges, latches, etc.
The response I got was "This seat fits not your bike"
So now I'm wondering if the people that are using the solo seats are rigging these to make them work?  Or is there another one for the non-G/S bikes?  For some reason I thought there was something like these for the police bikes?

Here is a link to the R65 specific solo seat for a Police model. More than likely it is unavailable but the part tagged as seat hinge doesn't look like anything from a standatd bench seat.

Scratch the unavailable statement. A search of Max BMW's parts fiche shows it available and able to be ordered as well as all the bits-n-bobs to get it mounted. How it does mount is another story.

Haha, yes, I saw that one. And exactly as you said, I can't figure out how it attaches. And Google provided some  (very few though) pics of them on a bike but nothing as far as if they open and close. I'd think they'd almost have to, not just for utility but also access to the battery and stuff under there.
I'm still looking, very curious now......

And THAT dear friends is why this is such a wonderful resource for our beloved rubber cows. Joe it now makes perfect sense how a solo seat mounts and still pivots up using one stock seat mount and one specialized one. You would never figure that out from the parts fiches.

You're absolutely right, Marcmax. I couldn't figure out how that funky ($30!!!) hinge fit into the picture. Now it makes a little more sense.

And here's another one: how about #5, that they call Flap?  Does that serve some specific purpose? Looks like storage of some sort, maybe paperwork?

A ha, thanks Barry. I thought it must have some specific purpose.

So, one more question then: the fiche also shows a different tool  tray. Do you think that means the old one can't be used?  I am having trouble visualizing why it would be so much different since it looks like the only big difference is that new hinge. Otherwise I was thinking this was just a shorter version of the original.

I will be able to add what I know when I get home from work.
I can logon at work, but I can't access my photos.

I know my subframe was modified with tabs for the seat rubbers to sit on.
Also, I owned one of those freaky hinge pins, but I don't think I was ever able to incorporate it.

More later.

OK, I remember now.  I DID use the weird hinge for my solo seat.  (Pictures at home).
Unlike the eBay pictures of the /7 solo seat, the R65 hinge only fastens with 2 screws to the seat pan.
The threaded portion of the hinge replaces the top nut and bolt for the right-hand subframe/mainframe connection.
It mounts from the outside-in.

And there is an equally queer nut.  It is tapered to go where the tapered Allen bolt used to be (1st generation*) on the inside of the frame joint.
Tightening this special nut is a bit of a challenge, especially as it is a high-torque, critical (frame) fastener.
I used a screwdriver and hammer for mine.  I'm sure there is a really nice specialty tool out there, somewhere.

*this was a major change on the switch from 1st to 2nd gen.  This is one reason why the tool boxes from one will not work with the other.  (they are also shaped differently)
Also, because of this, the two generations have different subframes.  The early one has the tapered hole on the upper-right mount, the later ones have a standard hole, and used a standard nut and bolt, which sticks out into the toolbox area, while the early ones were flush.

Not the best shots, but it gives you an idea.  I can take more tomorrow if there is something specific you need or if you just want more.

I'd be interested in seeing more except I've noticed that both of you have 70's versions. Mine is an '83 and it's sounding like there is a difference?

After the last bit of exchanges in this thread, I contacted someone on ebay who was selling solo seats.  Turned out it was a guy from Boxerworks. They sell some German made (not BMW) solo seats. He didn't have an R65 in their shop to look at but said, as far as he knew, it fit and worked the same as far as latches and locks go. And he couldn't tell me why the toolbox would be different, he thought it didn't look like that would need to be changed.

The early model tool box is different for sure and even the subframe has a different part no.

The fiche shows a utility seat but doesn't specify years. There are two different bench seats and it's the up to '80 version that also has that same toolbox.
So does the seat really fit both older and newer models?
