Title: Odometer reset button on an 84 LS
Post by: nashvegas on January 13, 2017, 06:25:13 AM
Simple question here /  before I buy parts I wanted to ask the experts.  84 R65LS.

Here's a pic of my speedo.  Missing the rubber reset button.   Just a whitish piece of plastic and black plunger.  Been like this for years.

I see Max BMW now has a rubber reset button that fits the LS. But -  How does it secure on here?

I ask bc everything I've seen online includes a metal nut, not sure how that would work here. I've read that the LS's don't use the standard "fix kit" for this that's been around for years.

Thanks in advance

I have the same problem. Seibenrock. Do a fix kit oem does not I believe. Reading previous posts there is a nut under the glass which will need to be loosened or the white bit of plastic out side. Some times the nut is locked in place to prevent the thing vibrating loose making the thing a bit of a problem to loosen.  If the nut comes off how do you get the nut back on with out dismantling the Speedo. That is one reason I have not changed mine . Also it is expensive for a bit of rubber

I got a silicone rubber switch-cover and just stuck it to the outside with clear RTV.  So far, so good...

There is a nut on the underside of the glass. You can see it in your photo if you look closely. To access it you need to pry the rolled metal edge at the rear enough to separate the internals from the housing. I wouldn't recommend it, but it can be done (I did). Re-rolling the edge is harder than un-rolling it. It looks to me that the rubber button cover you have shown is not the right part for your speedo since I don't see any way for it to be installed also using the nut. Maybe it is an updated part that does away with the nut?

I had my speedo rebuilt a few months ago and the guy informed me that they don't make the rubber seal at the bottom of the reset button anymore. To compensate, I now cover the whole gauge with clear sandwich wrap and secure it with rubber bands if it rains. It looks like a dog's breakfast, but it does the job until the sun is back out.

Hendersen Precision Machine sells the button and screw for $8.50.  I've used his replacement part on a few bikes
