Checking the rear wheel i find that i have some sideways movement. Has anybody pulled final drive apart and replaced the bearings and shims. Or should i get it done by a bmw mechanic.

Firstly are you sure that the slop is in the final drive? if the wheel is sloppy then i'd be suspecting the wheel bearings, not the final drive.
Final drive bearings do not go quietly, they run in an oil bath and have a long service life - when they do pack it in (usually because water got in) they tend to howl, groan and rumble to let you know that they are buggered.
Not a difficult job to replace, easier on the pre-1980 than later, but you will need a selection of shims and I'd buy several gaskets as you will be pulling that puppy apart a few times to get it right.
But please check your wheel bearings before dismembering the final drive.

+1 for the wheel bearings.
Easy to check. Remove the wheel and the gaskets on both sides then look at the inner races and rollers.
If rusty or pitted, change them.
Do one side at a time in order not to mix up the bearings.

Wheel bearings unless it's a mono. If it is a mono you need to tell us.
On a twin shock the wheel is only connected to the final drive through the splines which is not a rigid connection so if you can feel lateral play it has to be in the wheel bearings. You will need a thinner wedding band spacer or will need to lap it down.

It is a mono so no wheel bearings then

I've never worked on a mono final drive so disregard my comments.

R65 mono's are not that common so if no one here has been through the same issues as you take a look at a recent thread on a R80 mono:

FWIIW As far as I know, by the time the R65 went mono the only difference between the R65 and R80 iterations were the engines and final drive ratios.

Thanks Barry for the link it's a good read.

If indeed you need to reshim the crown gear, it's a bit different than a twin shock .
Here's a page from RealOEM .

Looks like the shimming adjustment is done on the small diameter part of the gear that goes into the bearing in the case .

Well all did not go well with the repair. I had the bearing replaced in Melbourne and the handling is now good but when i got home from a ride, oil was leaking out of the outer cover at the bottom. So it looks like another trip to Melbourne to get that fixed up.

Sorry to hear that - hopeful that they get it sorted out properly with minimum fuss - though having to take the trip back into town is certainly a hassle.

Can anybody with a mono drive check if there is any movement between the input and output on there bike. It seems there should be some gap between the 2 cogs which should create a bit of backlash.
