I went through and replaced a couple ripped/cut vaccuum lines inside the airbox but noticed that my intake is different than both the catalogs I have and the BMW dealer fiche has. Any idea on the purpose of these little jobbers in my intake suction boots?

Even though I don't have that type of airbox they are surely the discharge tubes from the engine breather.

That was a change for the crankcase vevntilation system, starting with the '82 model year bikes .
The earlier bikes, just had the rubber tube snap into the air horn .

Thanks guys - my BMW dealer can't seem to find this on their fiche... maybe I will have them look at an '83 or '84 model R65LS?

...OR... do I even need this type of ventilation system? Is it more or less efficient?

I not sure if it helps or not, my '82LS still drips oil from the carb on occasion .

Bob - mine seems to drip oil on the left side carb only... is this "normal" or a problem?

Could be to prevent soft rubber tubes from being sucked flat by air passage...same as my '81 R100.

You need to keep the engine ventilation system
But you want to delete and plug the Air injection system unless you are wanting your bike to be a "collector show bike"
The air injection is the pipes and valves that inject air into the exhaust ports
That is all the stuff in the picture below
Some vendors sell plug kits to do this

The reason those engine breather tubes are supported centrally with a spider is because they wanted the breather vapour to remain as vapour and pass through the carbs. If the tubes were allowed to touch the sides there would be more chance that the vapour would condense and cause drips. Which is of course what happens anyway but that's the reason they are supported in the inlet duct.

Essentially - I'd be eliminating everything in the illustration you posted - except I can keep the hoses running to each carb and just plug the inlet with a vacuum cap - correct? That was my plan anyway.

The vacuum port nipple on each carb is threaded to except a screw that plugs it
or like you said you could just get a hose to span between the 2 nipples

The vacuum screws are a non preferred size of M3.5 x 0.6 so you may not easily be able to find them other than as BMW spares. A model shop may have them or for anyone in the UK there are dozens of them in every house as M3.5 is the standard electrical thread size for switches and socket outlets.

I went with the solution of keeping the vacuum hoses to each carb and plugging the center vent "T" with a cap.
