Title: memory foam for my ass?
Post by: raphski on August 08, 2016, 12:18:42 AM
Today I went for my first longer ride on my 79 R65, about four hours. I have been thinking about a new seat for style. I like the look of the cafe style seats but want the option of being able to have a passenger from time to time. After today's ride I'm also interested from a comfort perspective, it was getting uncomfortable. I found myself moving back to were there was more padding, switching to the passenger foot pegs and generally becoming restless. I think mine is probably the original foam but has been recovered. I'm curious what others have chosen to sit on. I'm not into cruiser style but do want some padding for my bony ass.
Thanks!
Raphael

As stock seats go a 79 model is pretty comfortable if the foam is good. It's also a very good seat for a passenger.  But 4 hours would test any seat unless you are used to it.  Maybe a gel pad would help.

Hello !
My upholstery guy which last renewed my seat was against the gel seats stating they do not last are become uncomfortable. He advocated for Bultex foam.
I followed his advice (it is not the first time I used his services with very good results) and I'm delighted by the comfort of the result. It does not show at first but in a long ride it makes a tremendous difference.
A while back I talked to a guy coming back from a little trip : From France to Ulan Bator (Mongolia) going north through Russia one way and south on the return trip. It appears his seat was done by the very same guy with the very same material... The guy said he was very happy with it ... (that is an extensive test, isn't it ? )

Raphael, I'm guessing you won't be shipping your seat to France for a rebuild so what I might suggest is employing the services of a legit automotive upholstery shop. I did this with the recover and comfort fix on my R100S. The pros know. It'll be worth it and your butt will thank you.

I bought a Coleman ATV seat cover:

Contrary to my general experience with Coleman this is a 1st class product and as a result has become my go-to for any trip longer than an hour.

I am about to buy another one and cut it around a little to suit the KLE (which has close to the worst seat I have ever experienced on a motorcycle)

I have a memory foam seat on my R100 and it is comfortable for about 3 or 4 hours but I have yet to find anything that is great for all day rides. A sheep skin pad works great but is a giant sponge if you forget and leave it out in the rain. I will be curious to hear what you choose.
