just got the alpha ICU module from Motoraad Eletrik. It came with a bracket, but the holes are too wide apart and don't line up with the holding bracket that comes from the frame tube at 90degrees. If I try to flip the bracket around the holes are too narrow. Anyone had this and solved the mystery?

We have had quite the discussion on this.
That bracket is made for the bikes with a bracket that bolts on and can be removed and replaced with the new one.
Problem with our bikes is the original bracket is welded on.
So i made an adapter plate
If you go this route you have to get the new ICU as close to the frame as possible. I even ground the bumps off of the sides near the mounting hole.
After making the adapter I check the clearance by inserting a piece of card board up between it and the tank (like a big feeler gauge)
This type of ICU mounting bracket being welded on must be rare
Ted Porter (from the Beemer Shop) did not even know about this
My R65 has a 11/81 build date

Hello !
If the bracket you have is OEM, the two protruding threads are for mounting the iCU on the bracket.
The angled part has two holes to allow for the two Allen bolts to fix it on the bike support. This way, the icu has an angle of roughly 45° to the frame instead of the 90° original.
This is how it is mounted on my bike. I can't post picture because the bike is too far away from me now but I will.

Man, I have too many pictures in Flikr. I used zip ties:

The best way to do it would be to cut the welded on bracket off and mount it like the way Ed did except with a hose clamp like the fuse block is mounted

I think you have a different set up than what we have
Your original bracket bolts on and not welded on like ours in this picture
-
No.
I've the same bike as yours and the same frame.
Look at the picture from the BMW fiche and you will understand.
The bracket mounts on the frame and the ICU mounts on the bracket...
Once done, the ICu is not perpendicular to the frame anymore but at 45°. This allows for the extra radiator to mount and clear the tank.
Edit : From the pictures above, I think that the bracket you have is not the correct one. The two holes are not fit to mount on the frame.

Thx guys. Cut it and zip it till I get a hose clamp! I think we definitely have a different set up. My LS is a very early 1982 perhaps the early ones had a different set up with the bracket welded at 90° ?

The more I look at the pictures of your bikes, the more I think the bracket you got is not fit for the job. My bike, which is an 1982 model has the same frame you pictured with the same welded U shaped part for affixing the old ICU.
The drawing I sent is from the BMW ETK fiche. The bracket is attached to the welded U shaped support on the frame with two #5 Allen screws; These screws are spaced like was the fixing holes of the old ICU. If you do not have two holes on the bracket you got, it is not OEM and may/would/could not fit. IMHO.
But maybe you can use one hole to fix it to the frame and, then install the ICU on it ? I think that it is somewhat important that the ICU is properly grounded so tying it to the frame may not do the job.

Here is a picture of the new bracket mounted as intended

Here is how I mounted mine on my 82 R65. You will also notice I cut off the inside corner so it could move over some so it will not touch the tank.

I didn't want to cut the bracket off. I guess I avoid irreversible modifications. Most of the time.

Hello !
Back from Down Under, I was able to go into the garage and check the ICU and it's bracket. It was easy because this one sits in it's box awaiting for the original OEM to fail... (it was installed by Manfred in Berlin in April 1982 and has seen 200 000 km since). It runs fine with the new 0.5 Ohm coil... Even if it shouldn't...
The ICU fitted on the bracket below is the 12 14 2 325 284 last version from Mr BMW. And "not cheap" ... >:(
If you need I can dig out the BMW P/N of the bracket from the invoice... But this will involve a search in the "archives"...
Hope this helps !
Edit : should proof read before sending.
