What began as a 'tune up and flip' estate sale purchase of a 1976 BMW R90 got way over the top for my buddy and R65 forum member Mike Bengt Phorqs Crenshaw.
Long story with several twists so here's the condensed Cliff Notes version:
Cylinders, pistons and heads shipped off to Ted Porter's Beemer Shop. Ted says the jugs are worn beyond economical repair. The heads are re-buildable candidates but one has a serious valve seat issue. Executive decision made to upgrade with a Siebenrock 1000cc kit with the Nikasil bores, new pistons, rings, etc. and mount the rebuilt heads.
Six-seven weeks pass...
With the hint of Shiner and barbecued ribs, I'm invited south into the DFW MetroMess and spend a morning with Crunch getting the top end installed. I play the role of flight instructor to the fledgling. The Siebenrock bits are jewel-like works of art. The kit includes all gaskets, o-rings and... those bloody, round wire Jesus Clips. Ack!
By now I've discovered I've been Tom Sawyer'd and there ain't no Shiner and there ain't no ribs. In retaliation, I have Mike fit all the parts that have even the slightest chance of requiring a blood sacrifice, including those bleeding circlips, while I drink his coffee. Remember, there ain't no Shiner. Ain't no ribs, either.
Oak's Top End manual, Mr. Clymer's and a call to Ted Porter confirmed our concerns. The PO had mounted the rocker arm blocks upside down and back-ass backwards. All good now.
Today, Bengt Mike sent me a video of the initial start up. Sweet BMW music with the valve lash set just slightly loose for the virgin crank. Mike is excited and has offered to buy me a barbecue lunch this coming mid-week. harrumph
Y'all see a pattern emerging here? ::)

Lining up the conrod and piston wrist pin. Intense expression.

Pay Day!
The planets aligned and Mike "Bengt Phorqs" Crenshaw and I met up at Hard Eight BBQ in Roanoke TX for a muy tasty bbc'd rib lunch courtesy of ol' Crunch. Payment for my install assistance with the Siebenrock 1000cc kit on his 1976 R90 Jake. Mike's other R90 is Elwood.
Counted eight Texas Highway Patrol cars in the lot. Texas Motor Speedway is just about three miles west and these guys were tanking up on smoked meats before dealing with the race fans on the roads crowding into TMS for the Friday and Saturday night NASCAR races.

What race fans are the Texas Highway patrol having to deal with? Every trip I have made through your part of the country, the highway drivers make the NASCAR drivers look like they are standing still. You guys drive FAST!

There's a whole lotta Texas to cross in many directions!
Mike / Monte - that little plate of ribs wouldn't even make an appetizer according to most Texans I know!
;-)

As far as I can tell, the drivers in Austin think this place is a parking lot! I will say once I got out of Austin on my trip to New Mexico (and all through NM) things moved quite a bit faster.
Also speaking of NASCAR, I just picked up a MotoGP GA ticket for this weekend.

Marc, It's truly a long way from Texline to Brownsville; around 760 miles over sparsely populated highways. Drive 80mph safely and the DPS will either leave you alone or just pass you for holding him up. This happened to me on eight lanes of I-45 twix Houston and Galveston.
The Texas Troopers WILL nail you for speed if/and jumping back and forth between lanes, cutting close in front of cars, tailgating or just having outta state Yankee tags on the car -joke there. On my TXHwy 16 ride from Antelope TX -up on the Red River- to Zapata on the Rio Grande, I cruised the Triumph Trophy at a usual 85-90 mph. Lots of lonesome south of ol' San Antone.
Our Brit pal Lucky Lou has visited Texas a couple times and is planning another raid in 2017. He drove a rental from Beaumont -think Cajun border- to Ft Worth. Said the Class A rigs passed him on the Interstates like he was parked. There's that and his complaint that we drive on the wrong side of the road.
Mike, Those ribs were delish but at $15.50/lb for ribs or brisket, that gets a wee bit spendy. More so when you realize they're charging you for the danged bone! Crenshaw is a true trencherman and can put most folk to shame, including me, at my 153 lb fighting weight. Besides, I have two 'cue smokers in the yard that I fire up when 14-15 pound 'packer grade' brisket goes on sale for $2.99/lb.

Montmil that is food for thought. I must say i enjoyed my time in Texas, the food was good and the people friendly. Things are bigger and better in Texas.

One comment Lucky Lou and Lady Di made was that the restaurant food servings in Texas are huge. We did have to drag 'em to a nice steakhouse for a rowdy meal.

I've put a few tourists down for a nap just after a Mexican breakfast in Ft. Worth (full order of migas at Esperanza's, just outside of the Stockyards will do the trick).
