I think it is some sort of insulator or baffle

Over at ADVRider member wire spokes does gauge repair.  He's done both my LS and G/S speedos as well as a tach.

Great quality work, and don't tel him I said so but his prices are too cheap

Thanks SoloLobo
I have seen him on there and was going to PM him when i get around to doing something with it.
Palo Alto speedometer wants about 250 to 300 to rebuild mine.
I have also been looking at the Speedhut  speedo's  they are about 300 also

If anyone wants to try a DIY speedo fix the hard part is getting inside without doing too much damage to the bezel. One trick to prevent excessive distortion when bending back the crimp is to support the bezel in a hole bored in a thin sheet of something like MDF. It has to be a good tight fit for this to work and boring a hole of that size precisely is no easy task either.

Then even if the fix is simple you have to re-apply the crimp tightly enough to make it weather proof.  The guys that repair instruments need some skill to do it well.

wirespokes was active here not too long ago.  He's got an R65 with a big bore kit.

I think he charged around $100 for a gauge.

When I fixed my trip/odometer I made a tool to pry the bezel out of a paint can opener.  worked well enough.  I had to use it twice, as I forgot to put a rubber seal back in before I buttoned the gauge up.  Re-set the bezel with a brass drift and a small hammer.  Been holding well for the last 10K miles.

If I can remember correctly the time I fixed my R65LS speedo trip meter, I had to follow it shortly after with another bezel opening because the speedo needle fell off inside going over a railroad track. I think I wrapped duct tape around the bezel, once on again, and since then have had few humidity problems, so tape works well and the rubber hides everything anyway. I used a jewels screwdriver to gently pry at the bezel carefully.

Removed the Speedo when I installed the RT bars and was able to shake the Black felt to the bottom of the Speedo and grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers thru the lamp hole
