Have changed the engine oil and taken the bike for my first ride (very impressed) of about 40km. When I got home noticed oil weeping from airbox manifol where they join back of carbs. Pulled both manifolds off and looks like oil comming out of engine breather.
Previous owner had honed and re-ring barrels (did it himself) about 3000km ago and used valvoline car engine oil. I put in motul synthetic 10w/50 into her. Draining at present and putting in motul mineral 20w/50 and will see what happens. Any suggestions on oil for these bikes would be good.
The tako dances about all over the place. Are they repairable or is there something else that i need to check first? Oh yeh the previouse owner amitted to mucking about with the carbs so Im off to get a workshop manual to sort them out. The joys of getting a secondhand bike :).
If anyone can think of anything worth checking while Im getting the bike ready for riding let me know.

You didn't say what year your bike is but at that low of mileage the rings might not have had time to fully seat yet. I think "conventional wisdom" it to allow 4500-5000 miles (not km) to seat in on dino before switching to synthetic. I have been told by knowledgeable wrenches (on cars anyway) that if synthetic is used on a fresh rebuild the rings will take practically forever (if ever) to seat properly as a small amount of wear is required for this to happen. This could increase your blowby which will exhibit itself as more than "normal" oil vapor down the carbs...

The BMW 20W50 is a good break in Dino oil. Its made by Spectrol. After breakin you can move on to the oil of your choice. Others will chime in with their choices now. Do not use BMW Synthetic during the breakin period. (WOOHOO another ADOT!)

I use whatever name brand 20W50 I like when I go in the store.
One of these days I will write down and take with me the letter codes that tell me which is good for motorcycle (aircooled) engines. ::)
In fact, I just received my newest filter from Matt yesterday. I am planning on changing the oil this weekend, before my last big (first big?) hurrah of this year. (Oklahoma)

I've never bothered with synth oils in my beemer. A Police contract BMW mechanic advised me to just buy cheep 20/50 from a local motor shop and change it regularly.
