Title: R65 Center Stand not properly lifting bike
Post by: jjwithers on October 26, 2015, 12:24:27 PM
1980 R65.
This bike takes more muscle to get it on and off the center stand then any other BMW I have experienced.  Then I noticed that the center stand sits a bit more forward and both tires are touching the ground while the bike is on the stand.

The top of the stand is making contact properly with the frame yet the stand appears to be over-extended when lowered.  There aren't any signs of it being bent.

Do you guys know of this issue or what is wrong... or what the fix is?

The usual cause, is the frame / center stand wearing where the two contact when the center stand is deployed .

Usual fix, is to remove the center stand and then put welding bead in the contact area , then file it down to where the stand works better .

What about adding material to the center stand instead?  Seems easier to take off and weld then tearing the bike apart to weld the frame.

Your pictures show the stand is way way overcentre. I suspect some stands started too far over centre from new because it's a trade off between stability and ease of use and the factory will have gone for stability.

Welding the stand tips will transform the ease of use and my advice would be not to put it off too long. Probably the best thing I've done to my bike and mine wasn't as bad as yours.

Here's an earlier thread.   http://www.bmwr65.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1295894027/1#1

Worn pivot bushings and beat down contact points on chassis and stand contact points.

You also have the terribly designed Civil War mini ball boot contact point that most refer to as the Hernia Stand. Later stands have an entirely different geometry and a decent foot pad that doesn't ruin the soles of your boots.

Rather than spend money fixing a poor design, watch eBay and other sites for a 1982 and later R65 stand. They fit. Your back will thank you.

Here is a link to my repair job.
Seems like the bike could be a wee-bit-tad higher (i wish I didn't grind as much weld off) but everything works OK.
