Title: Sidestand Spring Routing/Hookup
Post by: Runninn1 on February 18, 2016, 08:46:17 AM
I have had the sidestand off for over a year (replaced tranny, etc) & I am finally trying to reinstall it. I can't figure out how to hook up the spring!

(86- R65)  It's a double ended spring ?  How and where do the spring ends  reinstall? (I can't locate a 'tang' to attach it to.....Help!!!)

Hello !
On the 82 R65 the side stand spring are attached at one end at two posts ON the side stand and the other end are attached on a plate which attach at the side stand axle.

If I remember, I"ll try and snag a photo of my setup.  I rarely use my sidestand though.  Although I did on Tuesday morning.

Is that Lake Travis or the Colorado River or both I see in the distance. Great day to be out riding the Texas Hill Country.

I'll be heading back to Austin, Tejas on Monday as another grandchild is due to be birthed on Tuesday, 23 Feb.

The spring is different from the one pictured (the sidestand is all stock....I am the original owner). Anyways, it has the standard looped end followed by the normal coils, THEN the spring makes a 180 degree turn & there are another set of coils, followed by another looped end.
(Confusing description).

Anyways, I could be missing the opposing hookup piece (the one not on the sidestand itself), but am not sure....thanks

*I rarely use the sidestand either...but would like to have that option.

I felt the sidestand on my r65LS worthless- a good way to drop the bike.

Purchased the sure foot from not Motobins but motor works i the U.K.

Love it [ch128077]

Travis is just a fat part of the Colorado, isn't it?  That was Travis though.  I was on the Lime Creek Loop, about here, or closer (wester) to the lake.https://goo.gl/maps/MUcA1E3DmrN2

In terms of deploying while seated on the bike my side stand is useless but  it works OK other than that or at least it does now. In typical German fashion the stock return springs are vastly too strong which is conducive to dropping the bike on the floor. What I did many years ago was to remove one spring and that made a huge difference. What I should really have done is replace the one spring with two weaker springs for safety.  I only use it for 30 secs a day after wheeling the bike out of the garage and it does the job. On every other occasion it goes on the centre stand.
