Title: Stock Speedometer Cable
Post by: badgertom on February 07, 2016, 07:04:29 PM
Does anyone know if I can use the stock speedometer cable on any
(and which one) mechanical speedometer available? I have a 1982 R65.

There are different lengths for high handlebars and low handlebars .

Other than that, they will work for OEM speedometers .

Are you meaning any BMW mechanical speedometer? Or other non-Motorrad speedos?

That reads to me like you might be thinking of using an alternative speedo. If so you need to know that the speedo ratio printed on the dial of a stock speedo e.g. W1276 represents the number of turns the cable makes for every mile travelled.  That speedo ratio is matched to a particular final drive ratio. 1276 for example is matched to a 31/9.  If you don't use the correctly matched speedo for any given final drive ratio both the odometer and speed reading will be out and while the speed reading could be corrected or might even be more accurate than stock depending on choice of ratio, the odometer which is usually very accurate will definitely be in error.
