I bought something from motorworks that's shiny.. Phoned the order in Monday morning, they say it'll be here Wednesday morning. (All times local Texas time.) I'm pretty amazed. Should have some photos to share by lunch time!
-
Reminds me of a long ago girlfriend; always the tease, promising to show me something... tomorrow.
-
Nailed it. As of the 2:40 am the parts were in Indianapolis.. That's a far cry from my garage.
-
As soon as I got home, hardly had my helmet off and had the box open.

I resisted the urge to put on oven mitts and have a go. It'll wait until tomorrow night.

Now that's some bling we can live with!

More detail:
Always start a job with the appropriate tools. Luckily this was a "2 'star" job, took about 1.5 hours and a mite more persuading than I thought. Cleaned the final drive cover while I had the RHS silencer off too.

Luggage clearance, I'm interested to know what youse think. The right side is 1/4" or less. It's been so long I don't remember what it was like when I acquired it.

You can see my daily driver in the back left. Another view of the RHS luggage clearance.

After getting knocked over, clipped, rear ended, and tossed down the road, things were not quite aligned correctly. The LHS may have been rusting through, but this is the real reason to get new silencers.

Looking good, Matt. I like your shop safety program, ie: aluminum cans!
Yes, that muffler end cap is kinda close. Might not be a problem, but... Perhaps check around Capitol City's welding supply shops for a small sheet of asbestos insulation. Figure a way to attach it to the bottom of the case. Try not to breath any evil dust if you cut that stuff.
Very "Green" that daily driver bicycle. It's Austin. Keep it weird!

Maybe you can cheat the muffler clearance a bit by putting a few shim washers between the muffler tab and its mount.
-
Matt,
Apologies if this is a silly or stupid comment but looking at the last photo of your post your silencers seem to have more of an unnatural "upswept" profile. Having said that - keep in mind I have no experience with those particular silencers. Are you sure you have the correct silencer on the correct side?
-
i think the upsweep is to provide clearance for axle withdrawal - the stock systems of course have an indentation so that they can maintain a lower line.
But to turn to the original question - yes you are going to have to do something about a heat shield or your panniers (and the stuff in them) will be toast (literally and figuratively).
-
an unnatural "upswept" profile.
I do think I have the correct silencers. I wondered about the mounting, if it was possible to rotate them, but I think given they're attached by two hex screws to the mount point they really only fit one way. They're also marked "R" and "L". Assuming the individual who marked them and I are oriented the same way... Now whether or not the frame mount point is bent or not.. I suspect at least one is. I don't have a photo of it, but from a further distance away the RHS does seem to be bent high, somehow.
Another consideration is that compared to Mike and Tony's R65s, this is a monoshock so slightly different as far as looks.
