Title: Rear wheel lug nuts
Post by: Matt Chapter on November 23, 2015, 11:36:10 AM
One of the worst, most unnerving feelings in the world is the vague, stomach swirling feeling of a loose rear wheel while going down the road.

I've had this happen to me several times over the years; I usually take the rear wheel off for tire replacement.  I had assumed that hand tight with the lug nut wrench included in the tool kit was sufficient, but recently I've come to the conclusion that I either need to replace the washers and nuts, or use an extension on the wrench to get a tighter fit.  I suppose there's an actual torque measurement but never really considered it, perhaps that's foolish.

Thoughts?

This document gives you torque wrench values for just about anything you might need to do.

I thought the same and it does for most things but not for lug nuts on a monoshock.

Snowbum has some colorful guidance and the torque levels are high  -way above "hand tight" :

Mono-lever models (and Paralever, including R80ST, R80 G/S, R100GS, etc); rear wheel bolts:
Models have been made with both three and four bolts/nuts.
NEVER EVER oil NOR antiseize these threads...NEVER!....just clean and dry
                           threads.   Use 63 foot-pounds for the R80ST, & a bit more, perhaps
75-77 for the G/S & 85+ models.  BUT: Pay attention to what your particular bike's
torque specifications are, some are higher.  USE BMW's Owner's Book values!!!
