Don't get excited by the thread title! Ha.  just need to know If the gear oil I bought can be used in the final drive and drive shafts? 90/80 hypoid.

But oils ain't oils......

There are recommendations made by BMW without knowing more about the oil you bought it is impossible to know where on the good, better, best continuum it falls. All we know art present is that you have a multigrade oil that provides 90 weight viscosity at operating temperature and a 80 weight viscosity at room temperature.


What we do not know is whether it is an EP rated oil, whether it is hypoid rated or what additives are, or are not in it.


So, yes you can use it, but for how long would be determined by more disclosure.

If you mean can you use the same 80W90 hypoid oil in the gearbox, drive shaft and final drive then yes provided it's GL5 rated.

Pick any name brand 80W90 GL-5 gear oil that you can catch on sale. My last jug was Castrol but that doesn't mean it's your only choice. "On Sale" got me.

Do not overfill the final drive but do confirm the "dome-capped" vent is clear. Unscrew the vent and blow through the threaded end. Clear? Done. Use caution with the small, steel bolt that threads into the alloy final drive case as you check for oil level. Way too many peeps strip the alloy threads by over tightening. A new crush washer is way cheaper than a HeliCoil repair.
