Post by: tc80211 on May 15, 2015, 01:53:48 PM
'83 R65.... has nayone plugged the hole that is left when the mechanical speedo cable is no longer used? Switching to a GPS unit and need to plug up the hole in the transmission.

I have some pics of a plug that I think someone on this forum made to fill the speedo cable connector on the gearbox. Part of the problem is bolt that holds the speedo cable in is also the battery ground cable and the bolt is also hollow to vent the crankcase.

I have not used one myself put kept the pics in  case I went the gps route.

When I added a TrailTech digital instrument, I kept it simple and cheap. Stopped by the local hardware store and purchased a solid rubber, tapered "bung hole" plug. Had the OEM speedo cable and matched a middlin' TLAR size. Tapped it solidly in place and then epoxied a shiny Nickel on the top. Been there for many years now...

Pick a length that doesn't block the vent in the gun-drilled NEG battery cable bolt.

I used an ear defender.  The type you squish up and put in your 'earol'.  It expanded to fit..... :D
