Agree that stock BMW sidestand on my bike is garbage.
What I do like about it is there is a specific place for it to attach to.
A Farley is on my LWB R60/5 but even the shorter version is too long for my SWB R65.
From what I've seen about Brown s/s is there is a correct model for our bikes but where to find is another story.
Surefoot from Motobins looks great and have heard great reviews but spendy and from the tiny picture on the Motobins website, can't visualize how to mount it on my bike.
Thinking about the existing sidestand - the pin that connects s/stand to mount on bike is loose - like wobbly loose.
Isn't there a way to drive out the OEM Pin and replace with a more heavy duty pin or bolt - maybe with a nylon lock washer to adjust tension?

Ken, I had a Brown's sidestand on my R65LS and I can say it was one of the best additions I made. I have since removed it and sold it to another forum member since my R65 is now a sidecar tug with no need for a sidestand.
Bob's BMW has the R65LS specific version but they are not inexpensive.

What do you find so offensive about the stock side stand?
The side stand is not located by a pin at all (or at least it did not leave the factory with such an arrangement), what you have is a shoulder bolt located in a bronze bush, the bush has a groove machined in it to allow the grease you put in regularly via the nipple to circulate and delay/prevent wear on the bush.
A new bush is only a couple of $$s at motobins or any of the other usual suppliers, make sure that the grease nipple and the drilled hole leading to the bush are clear and clean (a new right-angled grease nipple that makes access easier is also only a couple of dollars.
I have two of the Motobins "sure foot" stands here, the wife ordered one and was told it was on back order, then several months later sqaw that they were in stock and thought she had to order again. My but she was surprised when two of the expensive little beggars turned up.
Her surprise turned into incandescent rage when I told her that I could not fit one to her bike as when the R80 engine conversion was done the R65 pipes were recycled by simply cutting the header end off slightly and welding on a short section of larger diameter tube, the system was then "persuaded" to fit resulting in the header pipes being in a slightly different position to stock and right in the way of where the sure-foot would be.
I then looked at fitting what would have been a free sure-foot to my own r65 and I am totally unimpressed by the mounting system - if you are interested two sure-foots will appear for sale shortly here and fleabay shorty.
But, I have to say that I would not put one on my bike in a pink fit.

Originally, I thought one sent in his left footpeg to Motobins and they welded the sure foot to the peg but don't think they do it any more.
Is this the part I need to order to stiffen up my sidestand?

Yes but my bolt has a long unthreaded tail and a shoulder. I would ask them why their bolt is different

Ken, I had a 2-1 exhaust so there was no header on the side stand side. I did use the engine mount as one point and fashioned a clamp similar to the exhaust clamp around the frame at the required point. Worked like a dream.

I think some of the looseness is why the side stand will automatically lift if you leave it down and try to ride off.

I'm in the process of switching to conventional mufflers - will re-consider the brown!

The OEM side stand on mine snapped years ago resulting in a mashed pannier from it hitting a road edge rock on a campsite (bugger!). I replaced it with the old type surefoot (attached to the peg) and it never gave a problem again. When I refurbed the bike that old surefoot was looking rather tired so I replaced it with a new one. The mount on the modern version is not as 'clean' as the early one but it works just as well.
