Title: Exhausts and jet settings

the P.O. of my 1982 R65 put on nice stainless steel silencers, which he then drilled 6 x quarter inch holes in the end (to 'help the engine breath').

Now these holes give me effectively straight - thru exhausts (not quite, but not far off), making my bike rather anti-sociably loud.

If I were to buy new exhausts or have the holes welded up, would this have any effect on the jetting of the Bing carbs? IE. would I get rid of one problem (antisocial noise) only to have another problem (poor running/performance)?

Hi Tony,

I would just use some JB quick Weld and see what happens to the tune.  Welding will make a mess and rust.  JB Weld would just make a mess.  The Staintunes are pretty free flowing  to start with.  I bet the tune will be pretty close after your done.

I would check the main jets that you have installed in the carbs before going any further, the previous owner may not have changed them after his 'modification'. Get the number off of both carbs, they are stamped into a vertical web at the front of the carb, number will be something like : 64/32/325. Post your carb numbers ,and I can look up what came stock from the factory in the Bing Agency manual that I have.
