Title: Gasket Set Question
Post by: decorn33 on January 12, 2015, 07:42:47 AM
In a fit of spare parts passion, I found what was advertized as a complete gasket set for the R65 on ebay posted by an outfit in England.  The set arrived, and initially looked just fine, then I noticed the package label down in the corner.  The specs clearly identify that the set is intended for the R45. R65 is not mentioned.  Now I know that the machines are very similar, but logic tells me that at least in terms of displacement, they cannot be identical.  Can someone confirm to me that the set I received is not going to be 100% compatible with my bike? I want to contact the seller, but I want to be sure of my issue before I do.

Barry is our resident R45 rider so expect his response shortly.

IMO, I believe the gaskets will be the same for the R65 save, perhaps, the head gasket. A quick check of parts numbers on Bob's BMW or max BMW would answer your question via comparisons of part numbers for the head gasket.

I honestly don't know for sure but I would expect most gaskets to be the same even perhaps surprisingly the head gaskets.

Off the cuff and thinking from the front backwards:

Timing cover gasket, oil filter cover gasket, rocker cover gasket, head gaskets, cylinder base O rings, carb gaskets, engine breather gasket, sump gasket, gearbox cover gasket,  drive shaft and rear bevel drive gaskets are all the same.

If you list the gaskets in the set that I missed I should be able to visualize if there are going to be any differences.

BMW part #11.00.1.338.423 is for a complete gasket kit for R45/65. Motobins offers them for $66.66USD.

Max BMW lists the R45/R65 head gasket as part #04.11.12.338.716
Same gasket for both engines displacements.

Thank you gentlemen, that is reassuring. Particularly about the head gaskets. Those were the ones I was most suspect of due to displacement.  I though about checking the BMW part numbers myself, but the kit did not come with a separate itemized list including part numbers to look up, and I didn't want to open the package in favor of asking here first. I will follow through an check each one and report back on any differences I discover.
