Title: LS Handlebar swap.
Post by: Graeme on January 06, 2015, 03:54:41 PM
Hi All. I'm thinking about trying a more upright riding position for the LS. I've always used lower bars on all my bikes and changed them from high to low when necessary. Lately, though, I'm not feeling as comfortable and keep trying to sit up. I thought I'd try the standard R65 bars.

I', sure that there was something on this site about this but I can't seem to locate it. I did, however, come across this:- http://www.nebcom.com/noemi/moto/r65lsfaq.html

So, I need to change brake & clutch cables. Anything else? Thanks

Whatever bars you decide upon, remember that they must be 22mm diameter. Some folks buy 0.875-inch diameter bars and discover that the throttle tube will either not fit at all or, if forced into place, will not rotate as it should.

The Flanders link has many 22mm bars for BMWs. Dimensions are very helpful and you can get a good visual of each bar offered. Perhaps check with a BMW dealer to see if the "North American market" high bars are still available.

Beside possible clutch and hydraulic brake cable, check the length of the enrichment (choke) cables, too.

I have fitted the K11R bars from motorworks in england. Not as high as the r 65 bars but then you do not need to change cables or hydraulics, you will need to free hand machine the instrument cover to miss the bars.

Thanks Guys. The KR might be the go because a "little" higher might do the trick. On the other hand, buying new cables isn't a problem as I haven't replaced the units on them since I bought the bike about five years ago.

I did check the Members Map though because I thought that If I could sit on an R65, that might well sort out the problem but there's only myself, Tony up in North Queensland & Michael from Manly on it. I could certainly drop in on Michael the next time I'm up. Anyone closer to the Southern Side of Sydney or South Coast
 of NSW?

Hi Graeme, you are welcome to sit on my bike any time. Maybe we could meet up some time down the coast?

I think though that the Australian delivered R65 bars are no better than the LS. We did not get the higher wider USA bars here.

I am also wanting to change bars. I have been experimenting on a friends R80 bikes. He has two, one with "R" bars and the other with "RT". I think the former would suit me but suspect it will entail a cable change.

Compare the bars on my standard Australian R65 below:

Hi Michael. Thanks for the contact.  Great looking bike. Anytime you get down the coast,  please let me know.  I think you're right about the bars.  It's still fun to ride so change isn't urgent. I'll pm with mobile.  Graeme
