Now my 1980 R65 is all shiny and clean, I'd like to fit the old tank cover I was lucky enough to pick up a few years ago and has been waiting to be brought back to life. It is a full cover of the creased vinyl look, with a machined cut out for the filler cap, and two popper and stud straps that fit around the front mounting half-tube. Although the cover looks nothing to write home about off the tank and has no pockets, once it is stretched on I realise that it has been carefully made to create a 3D shape that fits the tank contours closely. The Mrs said it looks a bit Mad Maxish :o
There is some damage to the stretch points on each side at the front and I intend to reinforce these.
There are cut aways for the fuel taps with wide elastic to clip inside of the taps, and this holds the side of the cover down quite well, but unfortunately my bike has only got one tap, and I can see no obvious way of fixing the right hand side of the cover down and consequenlty this side just rucks up and is not good! I realise that these covers are quite rare now, but has any old timey R65 bod got any memories on how these were fitted? I will post some pictures soon next time I get a chance.

An appropriate length of elastic cord attached an open spot on the electronics mount under the tank would work. Either thread the ends through the fuel tap cutaway and tie them or make a small wire hook to attach over the cut away elastic for ease of removal.

Thanks! sounds so obvious now....will let know how I get on.

With some help from some smelly faux leather vinyl off ebay, some contact adhesive, and a good friend with a sewing machine, I now have got the cover patched up and fitting the tank. It fits well at the back and top, but there is a bit of creasing at the front. But by and large, I'm quite happy to let it sit and stretch for a while, and maybe it'll bed in. A little elastic strap running around the rearmost electonic box bracket and through the cut away on the right hand side where there is no tap, works well - you can just about see the plastic buckle I used - thanks again for the tip.
