Title: Pads
Post by: MikeFossl on August 27, 2014, 11:41:10 PM
My new to me 1984 R65 has very spongy brakes and overall excessive effort to stop quickly.  I changed the fluid and bled the brakes.  I'm looking at changing the  lines to Venhill braided ss and changing the pads. Any suggestions as to make of pads and where I can source them?  I'm in Vancouver Canada.  I've noticed that on-line many websites only specify R65 LS for brake pads.

Thx, Mike

I'm using EBC organic kevlar pads and they work well for me.

ATE calipers use FA57
Brembo calipers which is what you will have use FA18. I imagined all LS's used the Brembo calipers which would be FA18 but I've seen FA57's listed for an LS as well. Seems strange and possibly a mistake.

No mistake there, some of the early LS's participated in the empty bin policy and got ATE calipers.

Thanks Barry I have been looking for new pads also and have only seen for the LS.

Do the Kevlar pads squeal? I must have some type of metallic pads because  she squeals like a stuck pig. I'm the center of attention at every stop.

The EBC pads don't squeal, I have them on two R65's .

Brake squeal is common with the OEM pads .

You can try deglazing the contact arera of the pad and then apply rattle can paint to the backside of the pad, let it dry, then reinstall .

It's important to note that for the '85 and on R65, the pads are different.  The best thing to do if there's any doubt, is to compare old to new, and verify the swept area of the rotor is correct.

I have read reports that report accelerated and excessive rotor wear when using EBC metallic brake pads on the BMW stainless steel rotors. Recommendations are to use the organic pads. I have EBC organics on both R65s and they do not squeak nor squeal.
