anybody got a pic of rear brake shoes installed on r65ls for visual orientation purposes readily available? i'm having trouble...

I don't have a picture for you :'( but...
The cupped ends of the shoes go on the pivot pin towards the front of the bike. The straight ends go on the brake cam.
Upper and lower shoes are different. With the cam in place you can see how they will only fit on the cam one way. The upper shoe is shorter from front to back, the lower shoe is longer from front to back. With the springs between both shoes you should be able to snap them over the pivot pin and brake cam.
Are you putting in a new set of shoes? The LS has unique shoes and springs because of its bigger drum. I must have told my dealership "LS" five times but they still gave me the wrong shoes >:(

After determining correct orientation of the LS brake shoes -and you may already be aware of this little trick- the install is quite easy if the springs are attached to the shoes. Simply close the shoes as you visualize a clam shell. Fit the pivot and cam ends at their correct locations and then just pop open that clam shell. Confirm bearing and pivot ends are seated. Done.
I recently showed this technique to an R100/7 owner who was attempting to stretch the spings and catch their respective holes in the shoes. No way, Jose!

Also, the brake return springs are not interchangeable between a standard R65 and an LS version, the LS springs are longer .
I fought this for about an hour, when I swapped a rear wheel from my '84 LS, to my '81 R65 .
